The Dungeness Estate is a spectacular expanse of shingle desert forming a part of the peninsular that protrudes south from the Kent coast into the English Channel. This distinctive, undisturbed landscape is a stark piece of wildness that continues to attract around 1 million tourists a year.
The land is well protected as a National Nature Reserve and forms a part of the Dungeness, Romney Marsh and Rye Bay Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its unusual geomorphology (shingle ridges), plant and
invertebrate communities and birdlife.
The landscape that forms the estate is predominantly shingle with a scattered collection of dwellings and old railway coaches subject to long leases, fishing huts and containers let on a range of licences and leases, all positioned along the Dungeness Road, also owned by the estate.
The area is famous not only for its environmental importance, but also for the nuclear power station which abuts the boundary of the estate and dominates the background.
Over the years a number of properties in the area which continue to attract tourists and add to the character of the area have been sold off from the estate, such as the lighthouses, railway station and The Britannia public house.
The estate forms part of the peninsular which extends about 3 miles out in to the English Channel from Romney Marsh on the south Kent coast. The unusual headland has formed through the deposition of shingle over the past 5,000 years and now represents the largest area of shingle in Europe.
The Romney Marsh is a vast expanse of fertile wetland reclaimed from the sea, providing for a sparsely populated agricultural community. The marsh is bound to the south by the English Channel and to the west by the county of Sussex.
Lydd is the nearest town (4 miles) to the estate, providing a range of amenities including Lydd Airport and Lydd Golf Club. In 1959, Lydd airport was one of the busiest in the UK operating a successful car transit
service. Today it predominantly operates private and corporate services, however expansion plans are underway following a successful planning application to extend the runway and replace the existing
The larger conurbation of Ashford is 20 miles to the north and delivers a wider range of facilities including an international railway station with services to London St Pancras International taking 38 minutes and Paris on the Eurostar. There is also access to the M20 from Ashford which extends north west toward Maidstone/London and south east to Folkestone.
