Welcome to the Area
Stourport-on-Severn is located on the River Severn in the picturesque Severn Valley and marks where the river meets with the River Stour. Once just a small village, the pretty Staffordshire town owes much of its history to the waterways around it with engineer James Brindley selecting the area as the starting point of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal. Opened in 1771 this ran 46 miles from the town all the way to Great Haywood where it met the Trent and Mersey Canal. It soon become one of the busiest inland ports in the country and the town expanded as a result with hundreds of houses built for those who worked at new brass and iron foundries, tan yards, mills, boat yards and warehouses.
Today the homes at Waters Edge have been built around the historic Lichfield canal basin which is now home to a number of narrow boats just as it would have been hundreds of years ago. Residents choosing to live here are able to benefit not just from a stunning waterside location with picturesque views but also from the range of amenities and facilities that the town now provides, including supermarkets, schools, local stores and leisure facilities.
Leisure facilities
Stourport Sports Centre is a thriving leisure centre which provides facilities for the whole community. From the 25m swimming pool to the health and fitness suite or the sports hall to the different classes on offer, there's something for everyone, no matter your age, ability or fitness level. The town is also home to a number of societies, clubs and sporting teams incorporating football, cricket, hockey and even bowling. Golf fans have a wide choice of course with Little Lakes, Wyre Forest, Wharton Park, Ombersley and Kidderminster golf clubs all within a short distance of the town. Further opportunities for shopping and leisure are available a short distance away in Kidderminster whilst the magnificent cathedral city of Worcester provides you with yet more choice for retail therapy, entertainment and of course history thanks to its many interesting museums.
Living at Waters Edge allows you to take advantage of and enjoy the many delights not just in Stourport but the surrounding region too. The Stourport Canal Basins consist of five historic basins plus five canal locks and a dry dock. They have remained largely intact from the golden era of canals in the late 1700s and early 1800s and now, following a recent regeneration project, provide a great place to wonder around and explore. You can also stop off in one of the cafes or take a look round the two new Heritage Rooms. The River Severn and Meadows provide a beautiful location to relax and watch the world go by, as well as offering lots of fun activities for all the family including boats to hire, crazy golf, go-karts and a paddling pool to name but a few. If that's not enough to entertain the youngsters then why not take them to Treasure Island amusement centre a few minutes away which has a variety of fun fairground rides from the traditional Ferris wheel, helter skelter and dodgems to thrill rides such as the Waltzer, Sizzler and Crazy Cage.
Hartlebury Common Nature Reserve is located just outside Stourport and offers 200 acres of lowland heath popular with walkers, joggers and horse riders. It also attracts naturalists thanks to the many varieties of wild flora and fauna and insects. The Wyre Forest consists of 6,509 acres of woodland and forest which offers plenty of opportunities for walking. It is also the home of Go Ape, a 'tree top adventure' popular with families, groups, clubs and workplaces. Here people are kitted out with harnesses, pulleys and karabiners and then given a safety briefing before being let free on the many different courses which involve tree top high wires, tricky crossings and zip wires.
