Leisure Facilities

A Vibrant Market Town
Marlborough is a charming market town with a delightful cosmopolitan atmosphere, excellent shopping and leisure facilities, the widest High Street in England, a colourful twice-weekly market and tempting places to eat and drink.

The town has a rich history: folklore suggests Marlborough Mound, dating back to 2400 BC, is Merlin’s final resting place. Marlborough Castle, once a Royal residence, was built on the site in 1089 and, today, its ruins are located in Marlborough College grounds. At one end of the High Street is St Mary’s Church and, at the other, St Peter’s, now a craft shop, café and venue but where, in 1498, the future Cardinal Wolsey was ordained.
In addition to the enticing High Street stores and specialist boutiques, Marlborough is home to a branch of Waitrose and a new Tesco, close to Priory Court.

Eating out? Choose from fine dining venues, brasserie-style restaurants and gastro pubs or head for the Polly Tea Rooms, the perfect place to relax with friends and family.

Leisure & Culture
With festivals, sporting events and plenty of leisure facilities, there’s always something to do or see in and around Marlborough.

If your interests include music, singing, amateur dramatics, art, embroidery or a good game of Bridge, you’ll find a club or society in the neighbourhood. Marlborough offers tennis, bowls and cricket clubs and golfers have a choice of courses with Marlborough Golf Club and Ogbourne Downs Golf Club on hand. The leisure centre, conveniently close to town, has a gym, pool, sports halls, squash courts, exercise studios and health suite.
Marlborough’s Theatre on The Hill presents a varied programme of live performance and one day during the summer, the picnic cinema comes to the West Woods.

Every year, Marlborough hosts what has been described as ‘the best food and drink festival in the West of England,’ along with a Literature Festival, International Jazz Festival, Spring Fair and the October ‘Mop Fairs’ which now focus on fun rather than on the selection of servants.

Barbary Castle Estate on the Wiltshire Downs is the venue for the Horse Trials held in July. The cross-country course, dressage, show jumping, the Barbary Show and shopping village attract an international audience including world-class equestrian eventers.

Out & About
Marlborough is set amidst the beautiful North Wessex Downs, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – and living at Priory Court, you’re in the best place to enjoy days out and about.

Within just a few miles, there are an abundance of pretty villages including Pewsey in the heart of Pewsey Vale, Wootton Rivers, home to the renowned Royal Oak and Avebury with its Saxon church, fine manor house, museum and gallery.

Postern Hill is ideal for picnics or you could explore Fyfield Down and Pewsey Downs National Nature Reserves. Take time to admire the White Horse in Pewsey Vale or visit Wilton Windmill, the only working mill in Wessex, about 9 miles south-east of Marlborough. Savernake Forest offers 2750 acres of ancient woodland and it’s possible to walk or cycle along the Kennet and Avon towpath.

To visit the World Heritage Sites at Avebury Henge and Silbury Hill, just take the A4. Avebury is an important site in the area’s prehistoric landscape which includes Stonehenge to the south of Marlborough. Silbury is Europe’s largest prehistoric site and just across the road is West Kennet Longbarrow which dates back to 3700 BC.

Transport Links

Living approximately ½ mile from Marlborough town centre, all the facilities you need on a daily basis are close at hand. If you’re travelling further afield, the A4, A338 and A346 all serve Marlborough and the M4 may be accessed at junction 14. Local bus services provide links with Pewsey, Amesbury, Upavon, Salisbury and Swindon. Marlborough doesn’t have its own railway station but the nearest station is at Pewsey, less than 7 miles away, which takes approximately 20 minutes by bus.

About Developer

With 30 years’ experience in the creation of award-winning developments for the over 55s, Beechcroft selects sites in desirable villages and market towns. Our beautifully-crafted houses, cottages and apartments are stylish, energy-efficient, easily-maintained and a delight to live in. Each provides plenty of living space but fewer bedrooms than a family home – and most have sun rooms, terraces or balconies.

Inspired by local architecture, each Beechcroft scheme is unique, complementing the local area. Rather than being a ‘finishing touch’, landscaping is integral to the development – carefully planned and lovingly planted.

An Estate Manager is responsible for maintaining the development and keeping an eye on properties whilst owners are away – giving you peace of mind when travelling at home or abroad.”
