Local Information

Leisure Facilities

With its own post office and general store, several quaint pubs; the Black Horse, the Crown Inn and further south in Appleby Parva, the Appleby Inn; and a church dating back to the 14th century, it retains its historic charm with a mixture of old and more recent housing, it is highly regarded as a very desirable and pleasant place to live. Village life is enhanced by a number of clubs and societies including the cricket club, football club, a scout group and its own village website.

The centre of the village around Church Street and Mawby’s Lane boasts some charming buildings of note. The Moat House was originally constructed as the manor house shortly after the Norman conquest in 1066. Until the 16th century it was the home of the wealthy de Appleby family. Sir Edmund fought in the Battle of Crecy in 1346. Between the house and the Church is an ancient stone dovecote, enlarged when the house was built, but it is believed to have Saxon origins. Misses Moore’s Alms Houses, established in 1839, stands proudly adjacent to the Church of St Michael and All Angels.
Neighbouring villages and towns - Measham, Tamworth and Ashby-de-la-Zouch provide alternative venues for shopping and dining. Nearby Market Bosworth is an architecturally picturesque town steeped in history - being close to the site of the last famous battle of the Wars of Roses, at which Richard III lost his life.

Education

The local primary school (Ofsted rating : ‘Outstanding’ at last inspection) is sited at The Sir John Moore School Building, which also the venue for many local events and activities, a museum and heritage centre. Local landowner Sir John Moore was Lord Mayor of London in 1681 and wishing to use his wealth to benefit his home county, he financed the building of a school next to his family estate built in 1697. The building, based on an original design by Sir Christopher Wren, is Grade I Listed and now in the care of the Sir John Moore Foundation.
