Leisure facilities
Due to it’s delightful position on the banks of the River Hit, the River Flit and the River Ivel, Shefford was once home to Anglo-Saxon and Roman settlers, and has many attractive
historical and even ancient buildings. These include the imposing St Francis’ orphanage situated upon the High Street next to the Holy Roman Catholic Church of St Francis of Assisi and Shefford Porch, a beautiful example of 13th Century tudor craftsmanship.
Shefford was granted it’s Market Charter back in 1225, and still continues the tradition every Friday with a weekly Market and a Farmer’s market which takes place on the second Saturday of each month.
Even the name Shefford is derived from ‘Sheeps Ford’ which stems from it’s sheep market tradition and the ford over the rivers. Shefford is the perfect place to explore local attractions and rural Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and the Milton Keynes area.
The river Hit runs into Shefford from out on the Chalk Hills of the Sharpenhoe Clappers, and is just one of the great features of
exploring the natural area. whether it be riverside, woodland, meadow, lake or lock, there are many walks in and around Shefford, both gentle and invigorating.
Local shopping
Shefford has a thriving shopping centre, a good selection of pubs and restaurants. The town features a large modern Health Centre and Library as well as a range of sporting facilities. In addition a well-known business is the B&T micro brewery, which produces specialist ales. The town holds a weekly street market every Friday and a street fair in October
