History
There have been thriving markets in Newton Abbot for over 750 years, but the arrival of the South Devon railway in 1846 transformed Newton Abbot from a market town into an important Victorian centre for industry and much of the towns elegant Victorian character dates from this period.

Newton Abbot, apart from a good selection of pubs and restaurants, has the only working malthouse in the UK open to the public. Decoy Country park meanwhile offers a range of family friendly activities, whilst the popular Racecourse and newly refurbished leisure centre cater to those of a sporty disposition.

Newton Abbot is often referred to as the gateway to the moor due to its proximity to the Dartmoor National Park, but is also close
to the coastal resorts of Torquay and Teignmouth. Local attractions include England’s highest waterfalls at Canonteign falls, 15th Century manor house Bradley Manor and Haldon Forest park for woodland exploration with a difference.
