Seven Anglo Saxon kings were crowned there from AD900, and it's name means 'royal estate'. Since then, the River Thames to the west of London has been chosen by royalty and nobility for palaces, hunting grounds and grand country houses.
Today these remain as historic attractions and parks for all to enjoy. Many are within miles of The Boatyard, giving you ample choice to enjoy. Just across the river is the magnificent Hampton Court Palace, acquired by Henry VIII in 1530.
Bushy Park and Richmond Park are also nearby which is famous for its deer, footpaths, ponds and plantations, perfect for long walks, cycling and even horse riding.
Local shopping
The local retail offering couldn't be better. Where else could you have John Lewis and Waitrose as your corner shops? Both are literally next door to The Boatyard, and the rest of Kingston upon Thames has an excellent shopping centre within walking distance.
Kingston upon Thames is a market town and has been since the 13th Century. Today, the stalls offer both traditional and more unusual produce and there are regular farmers' and French markets. Elsewhere in town, shoppers can enjoy The Bentall Centre, Eden Walk and the chic boutiques that can be found in the quaint old streets around the Market Place.

Transport links
Kingston upon Thames is a town with its own identity but it is also part of Greater London, and the city centre and all its attractions are easily reached by road and rail.
Good rail connections make Kingston upon Thames a favourite for London commuters. London Waterloo is a direct thirty minutes journey and connections along the way include Wimbledon, where you can access the London Underground District Line, and Clapham Junction. Richmond is also on a direct rail route from Kingston Station and provides connections to the London Overground.
By road, Kingston upon Thames is approximately twelve miles from central London, eight miles from the M25 and less than five miles from the A3.
Turks riverboat cruises operate from the nearby main pier which will take you to Kingston and Hampton Court.
