The High Peak Trail is a popular and well-maintained path for walkers, cyclists and horse riders which follows the old Cromford and High Peak railway line. It is 17.5 miles long and runs from High Peak Junction at Cromford to Dowlow, near Buxton and it joins the Tissington Trail at Parsley Hay. It is an excellent walking and riding route, with stunning views across the Peak District.

The High Peak Trail has 3 inclines, each of which would have been served originally by a winding house – the trains would not have managed the climbs without them. Of the three original winding houses, only Middleton Top survives, and it is open to the public at weekends during the summer. A tourist Information centre and bike hire shop is located nearby.

Steeple Grange is an 18” gauge railway built on a former branch line of the Cromford and High Peak Railway (now the High Peak Trail), and the station is within easy walking distance along the High Peak Trail from Middleton Top. While not a very long railway, Steeple Grange offers an excellent insight into the history of the High Peak Railway, and is great fun for children. Open Sundays and bank holidays from Easter to September, plus some Saturdays in the summer.

The Derbyshire Eco Centre is the county hub for courses and activities focusing on education for sustainable development. It promotes creativity through the arts, and teaches skills to help conserve the natural world and to live healthy lifestyles. The Centre was built using sustainable methods, materials and technology to create an all–weather facility to deliver
heritage building skills, sustainable technologies, rural crafts, arts, environment and energy saving courses.
