There are a number of professionally recognised bodies for estate and letting agents in the UK to protect consumers in the home-moving process. These bodies can help you access support should things go wrong, or give you peace of mind when choosing an agent.

  • The Property Ombudsman (TPO) is an independent and impartial body which investigates and resolves disputes between the public and estate and letting agents. If you believe you have been unfairly treated, or had your legal rights infringed, contact TPO.
  • The Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA) is a voluntary professional membership body of letting agents who commit to high and professional standards of working. If you have a complaint against an ARLA accredited letting agent, ARLA can investigate the case on your behalf.
  • The National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) is a voluntary membership body whose agents agree to strict rules of conduct, which ensures a high standard and professionalism in estate agency. If you have a complaint against an NAEA accredited estate agent, NAEA can investigate the case on your behalf.
  • Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) is a qualifications and standards organisation that ensures best practice in the professional management of land, property and construction. Members are known as chartered surveyors and can be recognised by the designation of MRICS (Member), FRICS (Fellow) and AssocRICS (Associate) after their name.
  • The National Approved Letting Scheme (NALS) is an independent licensing scheme. If you see an agent with a NALS license you know that they have agreed to a high standard of customer service, are part of the Client Money Protection Scheme, and can offer independent redress.
  • Ombudsmen Services work to sort out complaints between consumers and property firms that have employed their services. Consumers can access this help free of charge.
  • Safe Agents - 'Safe Agent Fully Endorsed' is a mark given to firms that place landlords' and tenants' money into Client Money Protection Schemes. 
  • By law, all agents must sign up to a Property Redress Scheme (PRS) to ensure an escalated complaints procedure can be followed in the event that either the consumer or agent is unhappy with how their complaint has been dealt with. PRS will consider your complaint and work to find a solution.
