Armitstead Barnett has roots dating back to 1890 and we are exceptionally proud of our rich heritage. Over the years we have learned to adapt and change with the times. We are a multi-disciplinary business working with land and property in the rural and village sector.

1890 is when Thomas Armitstead (the great grandfather of Mr Geoffrey Armitstead) purchased a business then known as Corbishley.

    David Cowburn - Senior Partner

My Role: As Senior Partner I'm responsible for the overall running of the firm although I do have assistance via the Practice Manager. I also head up the South Lancashire office and property agency and development work overall. I really enjoy looking at the strategic future of the firm and identifying our route to achieving our next goal. I have been awarded the designation FRICS which means I am a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

Background: I was born into a farming family, my grandad and uncle both ran farms, and that's where I worked during my school holidays. I've always wanted to be part of the industry and my mum said I talked so much that I'd be great at the auctions. I took a surveying course at Harper Adams Agricultural College and have worked in land management for a utilities company, in a private practice in Cheshire and in a commercial firm in Manchester before joining Armitstead Barnett as a partner in 2000. I have represented both individuals and companies alike and tackled situations from every point of view.

    Richard Furnival - Agricultural Partner

My Role: I manage the Rural Professional side of the business representing and acting for a large number of individual farmer clients and landowners. I am also involved in both agricultural and rural property sectors, from selling small parcels of land to complete Farms. My days are generally spent undertaking valuations for a wide variety of uses, compensation claims for pipeline and utilities, Renewable Energy advice, Agricultural tenancy matters, range of rural property matters, plus dealing with the usual office management and financial matters. I am also an appointed auctioneer for Brockholes Arms Auction Mart on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings selling Clean, Store and Dairy Cattle and Barren Cows. I also conduct On Farm Dispersal sales throughout the year.

Background: I'm a dairy farmer's son from North Shropshire, my elder brother still runs the family farm, so the rural life has always been in my blood, however I was never cut out to milk cows 7 days a week so I thought being a rural chartered surveyor and auctioneer was the next best thing. I studied Rural Land Management at the University of Reading and having trained and practised in East Yorkshire and Cheshire, I moved to Lancashire in 1999, becoming a Partner in Armitstead Barnett in 2002. I have been a Member of the RICS since 1997 and Fellow of the CAAV since 1998. I was President of the Lancashire Association of Agricultural Valuers in 2012 and have recently been appointed as a CAAV examiner.

My Role: I'm involved with many aspects of the business. A majority of my time is spent within the Valuation department and residential agency, marketing properties and preparing them for sale. I also spend time on the rental side of things and within the land agency. I'm also part of the auctioneer team auctioneering at Brockholes Auction Mart on a weekly basis.

Jo Day - Administrator / Secretary
My Role:  I have been lucky enough to find Armitstead Barnett and I am now working as administrator / secretary in the Kendal office which has recently opened. It has been great being a part of the 'Dream Team' and I look forward to the new office going from strength to strength!

Background: I was born in Manchester where I lived until I was 18, when I left to study Creative Arts at Manchester Metropolitan University. After completing my degree I travelled around Australia for 12 months, undertaking temping work at the Naval Base in Woolloomooloo, Sydney before returning back to the UK. After various temporary administration roles I secured my first Personal Assistant position working for the MD / Operations director of Richer Sounds, the electronics and hi-fi retailer, where I stayed for 11 years. I then moved to Adelphi Real World, a Pharmaceutical Market Research company based in Cheshire, where I worked as Personal Assistant to the Chairperson. A big passion for myself and my husband is running so after ten years of travelling up and down the M6 to the Lake District we decided to take the bull by the horns and relocate to Kendal.
