    Locality
    image cannot be displayed
The town of Stamford is situated 100 miles north of London, just off the A1, which was the old Great North Road leading to York and Edinburgh. Captured in time by its conservation status this once major wool town has retained much of its old world charm and prosperity. Many of the buildings are constructed from old Lincolnshire limestone, hence the town's distinguished appearance and popularity with tourists and movie directors, providing key locations for the BBC TV series Middlemarch and movie's The Golden Bowl, Pride & Prejudice & The Da Vinci Code. Despite a modest population of 18,000 the town boasts 11 churches, 30 pubs, 20 restaurants and over 10 quality hotels and guest houses. Most are conveniently within walking distance of town centre, railway and bus stations. Regarded by many as the finest Elizabethan House in England, Burghley House was built in the 16th Century by William Cecil, the first Lord Burghley. Now in the hands of Miranda Rock, this stunning house, extensive grounds and sculpture park are open to the public over the summer period. Burghley has been holding the Autumn 3-day event horse trials on its estate since 1961 when it ceased to be held at Harewood. It holds the record for the staging of championships on an international horse trials site, two world championships, six European and one Young Riders European, and is the longest, continuous running international event. Originally called the Water Meadows, the Meadows is a pleasant place to picnic, recreate, watch or feed the birds. It provides level walking along the River Welland, where you'll find the Boudicea plaque recording her pursuit of the Romans, and is the starting point for the Jurassic Way.
