St Ives is a world famous fishing port and resort and offers an extensive range of day to day facilities in addition to a wide range of specialist shops, galleries and studios plus the Tate Gallery at Porthmeor. The area generally offers outstanding leisure facilities with a variety of water sports, coastal walks and some of Cornwall’s finest beaches.
The colourful Mediterranean-like atmosphere, breathtaking coastline and extensive sandy beaches have been an attraction since a visit by the painter, J M W Turner, in the late 1880s and have since become an haven for artists and craftsmen attracted by the historic and tranquil surroundings, beautiful scenery, mild weather and clear light.
The old fishing village grew up on a narrow isthmus connecting the mainland with “The Island” and the original atmosphere remains, with a quaint maze of cobbled streets and granite cottages. St Ives offers excellent communication with West Cornwall and beyond and benefits a branch rail link with the Penzance/Paddington line, whilst the A30 trunk road provides easy access over the County and to the national motorway network.
