Situation

The first recorded mention of Mevagissey dates from 1313 when it was known as Porthilly. Towards the end of the 17th Century, Porthilly merged with the hamlet of Lamoreck to form the new village with the name Mevagissey derived from the names of two saints 'St Meva' and 'St Issey'. The main sources of income at this time came from Pilchard fishing and Smuggling.

The current harbour is built on the site of a medieval quay with an Act of Parliament in 1774 allowing the construction of the new port. The inner harbour, consisting of the current East and West Quays was built from this time with the outer harbour added in 1888. The RNLI moved a lifeboat to the harbour in 1888 and constructed a lifeboat house in 1896. Operated until 1930, the lifeboat has now moved to Fowey with the old boathouse becoming the aquarium.

The port remains one of Cornwall's few working harbours with over sixty five registered fishing vessels ensuring a colourful and interesting bustle at all times supplemented with regular fishing trips and a summer passenger ferry to Fowey. Surrounding the harbour is a myriad of narrow winding streets filled with a plethora of interesting shops, craft workshops, art galleries, cafés, hotels and local inns. Recent years has seen the village become a popular holiday destination together with the growth and development of waterside homes taking full advantage of the spectacular views. The town caters well for every day needs whilst more extensive facilities including supermarkets, secondary schools and leisure facilities are available in nearby St Austell. Other renowned tourist destinations including The Lost Gardens of Heligan are close by as are the popular sailing estuaries of the Fowey and Fal.

Surrounding the town are miles of scenic coastline with the South West Coast Path offering stunning walks to nearby sandy beaches and coves. The local village of Gorran Haven boasts a delightful sandy beach and stone quay surrounded by National Trust land with noted walks to local landmarks including Maenease Point, Vault Beach, Dodman Point and Chapel Point.

Around seventeen miles to the west is the Cathedral City of Truro, which now forms the retailing, administrative and cultural centre of the county. Both St Austell and Truro have mainline railway stations connecting with London Paddington whilst Newquay Airport on the north coast has a number of scheduled flights to both domestic and international destinations.

Description

Formerly known as Fraziers Yard, home to William Fraziers boat builders, Little Meva was purchased by Stone-House Design and Build Limited with a vision to create a selection of individual waterside homes. Following significant and complex works to the original sea wall, the ten new homes have been formed from a mixture of conversions and new builds. All enjoy a variety of views over the ever busy harbour or stunning grandstand vistas directly out to sea.

Each of an individual style, the new homes have been built to a contemporary design with detailing and character reflecting the historic town and setting. Faced with attractive local stone, mixed with rendered and timber clad elevations, most of the properties benefit from superb seaward facing balconies and sun terraces with some actually cantilevered out over the sea wall overhanging the rocky inlets below.

The Yachtsman's House is on the inner side of the courtyard and has limited views, benefitting from an integral garage but no additional parking space.

Stone-House Design And Build Ltd

Established for over thirty years, Stone-House Design & Build is a family concern with a dedicated, proven workforce and a strong, in-house design capability. Specialist skills are bought in if required, an example at Little Meva being structural engineering services from the John Grimes Partnership. Increasingly focused on the upper end of the market, Stone-House aims to produce prestigious homes of the highest quality, usually in stunning locations. Imaginative Conversion Projects, more than New Builds, are often the route taken in order to secure the very best of sites. Examples of relatively recent and highly successful Stone-House projects are Barn Conversions at Carkeel and Chillaton, creating eleven beautiful homes, and the conversions of the Sharksfin Hotel in Mevagissey creating six flats, a bijou cottage and a thriving bar and restaurant.
