A racket for Italy property buyers

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009
Some of the best male tennis players in the world will be in action in Rome this spring as the eternal city hosts the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, part of the ATP Masters tour.

Held from April 27th to May 4th, the event will offer Italy property seekers and others the chance to see some of the biggest names in the sport.

As an example of this, last year’s tournament was won by the 2008 Australian Open champion, Novak Djokovic, while the previous three years had seen Rafael Nadal triumphing on the clay courts.

The roll of honour down the years has also included such greats as Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras and Bjorn Borg.

Italy property buyers may also enjoy a range of other events in the Italian capital during the spring.

These include the Birth of Rome, which is marked on April 21st to commemorate the founding of the city in 753 BC.

Tapestry of fun for Normandy property buyers

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009
Normandy enjoys some old-fashioned fun in July when the Bayeux Medieval Festival takes place.

Normandy property buyers and others can enjoy a range of historic frivolity with jugglers, knights and musicians in period costume bringing the sounds and sights of days of yore to the historic town.

Those keen on buying Normandy property in a location deeply rooted in both British and French history may find Bayeux just the place.

The events of 1066 - from the appearance of Halley’s Comet to King Harold’s death - are faithfully recorded by the Bayeux tapestry, which is on display in the town.

And this year will see the 65th anniversary of an invasion in the opposite direction, the D-Day landings, something that will be commemorated all over the region.

Alternatively, anyone preferring flower power to military might can enjoy the Beuvron-en-Auge geranium festival, which is held in the village each May.

Flower power for Tuscany property seekers

Monday, March 30th, 2009
The annual Florence International Iris competition is to take place from May 4th-9th, the Italian Iris Council has said.

Tuscany property seekers hoping to enjoy some floral splendour can see the show at the Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence, where growers from around the world will have cultivated and planted their irises.

An international jury will judge the flowers according to a variety of criteria, while those simply looking to enjoy some colour and splendour can admire the blooms.

Those seeking Tuscany property can also enjoy the many historic and artistic features of Florence itself, with its renaissance art and architecture.

It is also possible to experience other floral events in the region in early May, such as the Greve Flower and Plant Show in the Chianti area.

As the name suggests, this will also offer a chance to sample the famous local red wine.

Law change could help Canary Island property seekers

Monday, March 30th, 2009
Spain has been told to change its property laws by the European parliament to prevent excessive urbanisation.

The call - which could benefit those buying Canary Islands property - saw MEPs voting 349 to 110 to suspend European Union (EU) aid to the country unless it changed its regulations.

As well as criticising "excessive urbanisation" in coastal areas, the parliament also hit out at the "outrageously slow" process involved in compensating those affected by unlawful building practices.

Such a situation could lead to those buying Canary Islands property getting better protection under the law.

Recently, a court case in Spain ruled that charging more capital gains tax to foreigners if they sell on a property was illegal under EU discrimination law.

The country had been charging its own nationals at a 15 per cent rate, while Britons and others had to pay 35 per cent.

Orlando property auction to be held

Friday, March 27th, 2009
A real estate auction will be held in Orlando on April 2nd, it has been announced.

Zetabid will be holding the sale in the city with over 20 of the 100 central Florida homes up for offer being Orlando property lots.

These will be varying types of home from single family homes to condominiums, the property auctioneering firm has said, with prices ranging from $5,000 to $102,000 (£71,000).

Chairman of the company Bob Bellack commented: "Zetabid’s auctions are outstanding opportunities for investors, as well as first-time home buyers and trade-up buyers, to pick up terrific bargains."

He added that the market for cheaper homes has "heated up considerably" recently as investors are able to generate cash flows from such assets in a way that was not possible a year ago.

Such a prospect may entice those thinking of investing in Orlando property.

Earlier this month the Orlando Regional Realtor Association produced figures showing that house sales in the city in February this year were 28.1 per cent up on the same month in 2008.

Expert speaks of bargains for Costa del Sol property buyers

Friday, March 27th, 2009
There are plenty of bargains now for those seeking to buy real estate in Spain, an expert has said, something that may interest those particularly keen on Costa del Sol property.

Director of property portal Nubricks Adam Samuel said that the market in Spain has seen prices falling before the world economic crisis began, with this decline having fed into pricing.

He commented: "Now there’s quite a lot of distressed or below market value properties on the market, while you’re seeing up to 50 per cent reduction in price."

Mr Samuel added that this has brought more buyers out as even in a crisis there are people hunting for bargains, which in this case are "becoming available".

Such bargain hunters may include those looking for cut price Costa del Sol property.

Earlier this month Spanishhotproperties.com said now is the best time to invest in Costa del Sol property as the number of bargains may diminish, with large investor firms poised to enter the market later in the year.

Quieter areas - the next Costa Blanca property hotspot?

Thursday, March 26th, 2009
The Costa Blanca is not all about brash locations such as Benidorm, it has been stated.

In a feature on the less heralded parts of the region, the Times noted that many areas offer not just a quieter scene but a more quintessentially Spanish experience, in which English is seldom spoken and "paellas reclaim their culinary sovereignty over curry and chips".

The paper stated that Murcia offers very quiet beaches and those seeking cultural heritage can find it in places like Orihuela and Alicante, where old baroque and renaissance buildings can be found.

Costa Blanca property buyers looking for something different may decide that such locations are the ones in which they may wish to look.

Earlier this week the Alicante area was given a boost when budget airline easyJet announced it was bringing forward its programme of expanding services from Manchester Airport, meaning there will be more flights to the city this summer.

This could provide easier access to the region for Costa Blanca property seekers.

Algarve property going designer, says developer

Thursday, March 26th, 2009
A property developer has said that modern state-of-the art homes are becoming a more prominent feature of the Algarve property market.

Speaking to the Independent, Ted Baillie, who has overseen many modern housing projects in Portugal, stated that the age of such designer homes being the exception has passed, with more modern materials being in vogue.

A reason for this is that people like to use more glass to enhance the sense of "space and light" in a property.

He stated: "On the Algarve there’s a lot of traditional-style development but you can definitely see a move towards modern design."

Such innovations may be attractive to many potential Algarve property buyers.

The region may be a major beneficiary of another recent shift in buyer tastes, which has seen Portugal become the most popular investor destination according to one poll.

Homesoverseas.com revealed earlier this month that its latest analysis of searches on both the country and individual properties has shown Portuguese homes to be the most sought-after.

New flights for Costa Blanca property seekers

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009
Budget airline easyJet has announced that the Costa Blanca will benefit from its decision to bring forward the expansion of its operations from Manchester Airport.

The decision to introduce new services in May, rather than August as originally planned, includes extra flights to Alicante.

UK commercial manager for the airline Carly Brear said the additional holiday flights in the summer would make it easier for people from the north-west to reach the new destinations.

Such a situation could boost Costa Blanca property investors looking to rent these out to tourists.

Earlier this month Costa Blanca property expert Colin Scriven, from the Hamiltons of London estate agency, told the Times that buyers should be able to find plenty of bargains in the region at present.

This was because only those being discounted heavily were being sold, he explained.

One example of such a cut price deal quoted by the paper was a two-bedroom flat whose price was trimmed from €351,278 (£323,773) to €200,781 in November 2008.
