Expat finds happiness in Italian property

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009
A British expat living in Tuscany, Italy has been telling the Telegraph how to enjoy the simple things in life.

Emma Williams told the newspaper that a recent visit to Italy from her parents had made her wake up and appreciate what she had.

She said: I noticed simple things that made me smile - the things that made me move to this part of Italy in the first place."

Things such as the reflection of the sun bouncing off the river, the way people in her village smile and wave when they recognise her and the sight of a woman embroidering on her doorstep.

However, the good comes with bad, which has made Emma even happier about the good. The fact sarcasm is not understood by Italians and that the post comes only once a week only contribute to her experience of living in Tuscany.

Tuscany is located in central Italy and has the famous city of Florence as its capital.

Picasso’s French property opened in exhibition

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009
One of the many French properties lived in by Picasso is being opened up to the public this summer.

For the first time this year the Chateau de Vauvenargues, near Aix, is being opened up to the public, according to Nick Trend from the Telegraph.

Picasso lived there with his family in 1959 when he was 80-years-old.

The home is still owned by his stepdaughter Catherine Hutin and visitors can expect to see an amateur film made by the painter from when the artist and his family moved into the French property.

Mr Trend says the Picasso Museum in Antibes is also a must-see show - the chateau was used as a studio by the artist in 1946 and is, according to Mr Trend, one of the most beautifully located museums in the world.

In addition, there are four more exhibitions available to the public this summer in Provence about Picasso.

These include the Cezanne Picasso Exhibition in Aix-en-Provence, the Catherdral of Images sound and light show in Baux-de-Provence, the Musee Reattu in Arles and the Museum of Photography in Mougins.

Picasso is famous for developing the Cubist movement in art in the first part of the 20th-century.

How to house hunt for Italy property

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009
Northern Tuscany is place which is "impossible" to visit without searching for an Italian property.

Author Roma Tearne wrote an article for the Times enthusing about the delights of the Italian region following her recent travels with her husband there.

He was interested in experiencing a part of Italy that is off the beaten track and away from the main horde of tourists.

Roma said: "After two days of hill walking…and noticing the extraordinarily iridescent wild orchids, we began to feel our hectic life in England disappear."

She was on the hunt for a new home for the pair of them.

Several adventures through the rough and authentic Italian towns and villages of Tuscany finally brought the pair to a small village on the Passo della Cisa where they spotted an empty, neglected house cluttered with roses, wild thyme and a garden of fig trees.

The Times states that Roma now owns an Italian property in Northern Tuscany.

Some of the art spots which may draw Brits to relocate to Italy in the region include Florence, Lucca, Pisa and Siena.

French property in Cote d’Or stands apart from current climate

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009
French property in the Burgundy wine region has been resisting the downturn in the property market.

Houses in the Cote d’Or do not often appear on the market but when they do, they rarely stay available for long.

As the area is dedicated to vineyards, development opportunities also do not appear very often. But the natural beauty of existing property means it can be a canny investment for those quick enough to snatch one up.

Su Bishop of Arena Park France, specialists in high-quality conversions in the area, said houses usually pass between family members instead of reaching the open market.

"In the rarity a house becomes publicly available it’ll invariably be relatively expensive and the owner will never have to contemplate reducing the price simply because they can afford to wait for that hungry buyer," she added.

Arena Park France is run by Su and her husband. They employ a team of French and English-speaking craftsmen to design and renovate old stone buildings in the region.

Corbusier’s French property considered as heritage site by Unesco

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009
French property created by architect Le Corbusier has been nominated as a Unesco World Heritage site.

The World Heritage Committee is meeting this week in Seville to decide which areas will make it onto the list.

Most sites have a cultural significance but others include natural areas of beauty that include both countryside and culture.

Already there are 878 properties on the list which are considered to be significant beyond the borders of the country and to the world at large.

The first places to become World Heritage sites when the list was created in 1978 were the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador and the city of Quito.

Since then, areas such as the Palace of Versailles in France and the Angkor Wat temple complex of Cambodia have been added.

Currently, 30 of the listed areas are in danger from threats such as poorly managed tourism, pollution and urban development.

The UK is a member of the National Commission for Unesco and aims to promote mutual understanding, peace and sustainable human development.

Florida property on Palm Beach becoming increasingly affordable

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009
The price of island properties in Florida’s Palm Beach has dropped to something a little more "reasonable" this year.

PalmBeachPost.com said an increasing number of homes are appearing on the market for under $2million.

Engel & Volkers associate Liza Pulitzer said: "Two years ago, I would have only been able to find a building lot for $2 million. Now we’re seeing a pretty good number of houses at $2 million or less."

She attributed this availability to people becoming more realistic with what they think their house is worth.

However, Century 21 agent Douglas Rill believes the prices will not remain low for long. He said that properties currently being listed at under $1.5 million will disappear by 2010.

Last year, the average price a family home sold for in Palm Beach was $3,875,000, according to Leslie Evans, an attorney who tracks real estate on the island.

The first quarter of 2009 had seen an average price of $3.5 million.

Part of the areas popularity is its access to 47 miles of clean, Floridian beaches.

Edith Piaf’s French property up for sale

Monday, June 22nd, 2009
The English owners of Edith Piaf’s former home in the south of France are returning to England.

Rupert and Sophie Scott moved into Les Parretts six years ago, reports the Telegraph.co.uk.

Mr Scott said: "We decided to take a year off and came out here. But we started to have such a nice time that we decided to stay."

Their three children attended an international school in Mougins.

"It’s been a life-changing experience," Mr Scott adds.

"At the end of the day, the tax is still cheaper and you get more house and land for your money."

Stuart Baldock, from Property Vision, says it is important to get the right kind of house when moving to France. Families have different requirements of a permanent home than a holiday home.

Things like near-by schools and proper, non-tourist shops are a must.

The life of Edith Piaf was recently captured on the film La Vie en Rose, starring Marion Cotillard who won an Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of the singer.

Spain properties to go under the hammer

Monday, June 22nd, 2009
Buyers in Spain are set to pick up a bargain in July with the announcement of a property auction.

Palma Property Auctions, based in Palma de Mallorca, has started to hold voluntary auctions to help homeowners prevent their homes being reposed.

The next auction is scheduled for July 28th and will feature Samantha’s - a well-known restaurant in the area - drawing in the likes of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones for dinner.

Director of Palma Property Auctions Hans von Rotenhan said: "Many of the people who sell through us… have several properties and they want to free up some capital to be able to invest it in other projects or investments."

Also going under the hammer are villas near the coast and apartments located in the Old Town of Palma.

Currency Index, a money exchange firm, stated that prices in the Costas have reduced by 30 per cent which will make buying properties in Spain even more appealing.

Florida properties face insurance bill

Monday, June 22nd, 2009
People looking to move to Florida may be interested in news a bill is about to be decided about the insurance market there.

Governor Charlie Crist is about to decide whether to veto or sign the bill which - if passed - would partially deregulate the property insurance market in Florida, reports jacksonville.com.

He said: One of the things that I don’t want to see happen is an unfettered opportunity to raise property insurance rates."

Insurance companies would be able to charge rates that would be free of control by the Office of Insurance Regulation.

The creator of the bill, Bill Proctor, said the bill will give homeowners the choice whether they want to pay less for companies that might not be able to cover them if a storm hit or pay more for "more reliable insurance".

In related economic news, last week saw the American Bankers Association’s Economic Advisory Committee saw a 0.5 per cent rise in the country’s gross domestic product.

This rise could preceed a rise in property prices in Florida and beyond.

French property sales ‘being made between Britons’

Friday, June 19th, 2009
Many French properties are currently being sold by British expats to their fellow countrymen, it has been stated.

In a feature on the subject, the Daily Telegraph has noted that some expats are looking to cash in on the high value of the euro against the pound.

However, estate agency Winkworth revealed that most of these properties are being bought by Britons seeking to make the opposite move.

Speaking of the British sellers, representative of the agency Roddy Aris said: "The advantage is that they can take lower offers than their French counterparts. They can take a bigger hit."

Such a situation could mean buyers of French property are able to negotiate greater discounts from Britons than others.

One reason many UK buyers are still keen on French property is the lifestyle benefits the country offers.

A poll of expats by NatWest found that France was the top country in Europe for quality of life.
