Heavy snow could interest skiing fans with Spanish property

Heavy snow has been reported in a number of areas popular for skiing in Spain, which could interest those planning a winter Spanish property break some time this month.

According to Fast Track Ski, ski resorts Baqueira Beret and Formigal have both been hit by large amounts of snow over the past two days.

Following the news, both resorts announced they would be opening their doors to holidaymakers soon, despite official opening dates being some three weeks away.

Those with Spanish property in either area could therefore find it the ideal time to get flights to the country and take their winter skiing holiday now, before the rush of tourists which may be seen later this month.

Commercial manager for the Formigal resort Jose Luis del Valle said: "This is great news, we should be able to open very soon. And with our great offers like free ski hire and free lift passes for kids, a holiday to Formigal won’t break the bank," reported the source.

According to the J2Ski report, Formigal is due to get more snow this Friday (November 13th).

Florida property break ‘could be ideal for golf fans’

Those who love golf could discover that finding a Florida property and heading to the state for a sporting break is the ideal way to escape the UK winter.

Writing for the Daily Mail, Graham Norwood said that "golf and overseas holiday homes are a marriage made in heaven".

He said that while in the UK, the nights may be getting darker and the weather colder, those with a Florida property could find that they can still ’swing in the sunshine" during the winter.

According to figures from the Golf Research Group published in the newspaper, there are 32,000 golf courses throughout the globe and more than half have some form of property on them.

Those with a passion for golf looking for a holiday home abroad could find a Florida property the right kind of home to invest in, which the source noted has 1,250 golf courses.

Florida is well known for attracting older and more affluent travellers, many of whom may enjoy leisure pursuits such as golf in their spare time.

French property break includes visits to “lovely small towns”

A couple holidaying in the French property of friends have written about their holiday and praised the country for its "lovely small towns".

Speaking to the Telegraph, reader Anne Everest said that in order to stay in their friend’s French property, which is in Normandy, all they provided was "a few bottles of creme de cassis, creme de mure and Chambord".

On the holiday, Ms Everest said that her husband was once again enthralled by driving, as zipping around the region of Normandy was much like driving back in the 1950s and 60s.

"We explored all-but-deserted country roads, past orchards bursting with shiny red apples," she said.

Normandy is a popular French property destination for history buffs as it was the landing site for the invasion and liberation of Europe from the control of the Nazis during the second world war.

It is home to many cemeteries in which British soldiers are buried, making it a popular place for UK holidaymakers to visit.

Highlights

45% of indexed locations saw increases in searches, 40% decreases, 15% no changes
Australia and New Zealand improve their market share for the second consecutive month by 17% and 12% respectively and are the only two countries in the Top 20 to increase searches this month
Germany, Switzerland and Austria recovering fastest with more year on year searches than 2008
India jumps into the Top 20 leap-frogging the United Arab Emirates and Egypt
The Caribbean Windward Islands became the fastest climber, up an average of 33 places a month

Commentary

Looking back over historical data we’re seeing the same kind of seasonal effects on search patterns as in previous years. Activity took a huge knock at the end of 2008 when the Credit Crunch and collapse in buyer volume was really biting, but some countries have weathered the storm better than others and we’re seeing the first signs that prospects are improving with 4 of the Top 20 countries registering positive growth on last year’s equivalent monthly performance.

Commenting on the climbers and fallers in this month’s search chart Robin Wilson, Head of Overseas at Rightmove said:

“Whilst most countries are seeing declining search volumes in line with the usual seasonal slow down, Australia and New Zealand are ignoring the Christmas hype and throwing another turkey on the Barbie, notching up increases to both their market share and overall search volumes. It’s an impressive performance and bodes well for the New Year when resolutions and emigration dreams really kick in and drive lifestyle buyers.

The stealth success story of 2009, Germany, continues to perform well joining Austria, Switzerland and Australia as one of only 4 countries hitting higher monthly searches in October 2009 than 2008. Germany also recorded 2^nd and 3^rd place on our top trending locations by delivering consistent positive growth month on month and, unlike Austria and Switzerland, may not see a decline as the winter sports season fades. Germany certainly seems one to watch in 2010 and points towards it possibly being among the fastest recovering destinations in 2010.

India makes the leap into the Top 20 for the first time, buoyed by a well received show from Hamptons and positive PR around the commonwealth games they are hosting in 2010. With a huge base of savvy British Indian investors to draw on, Indian property developers and agents seem well placed to capitalise.”

Home buyers ‘rushing to escape stamp duty’

First-time buyers in the UK are "rushing to escape stamp duty" it has been claimed, as any properties under the cost of £175,000 are exempt from such charges until December 31st.

However, such charges when buying a home could see UK buyers tempted to invest in an overseas property.

And with property markets beginning to recover around the world, now could be a good time for Brits to invest in property in Spain or a home in France.

The cost of buying a home in the UK could be putting purchasers off settling down in their home country, with figures from Winkworth estate agents showing that in 2008, the average percentage of enquiries from first-time buyers fell by almost 56 per cent to 19 per cent.

The Daily Mail recently noted that if property investors are able to pay for a home in cash, then the Spanish property market could provide some great bargains.

Luxury travellers ‘may still head to French property’

Luxury travellers are still heading to French property for holidays despite the fluctuations seen in European currency, it has been noted.

According to the organisers of the Luxury Travel Fair, luxury travellers may not be as affected by changes in how much their money is worth abroad.

Show director Chris Gallon said: "There is a big market [of travellers] out there who say ‘we will stay at home this year’ but, specifically for luxury travellers, they are not so affected by changes in currency."

He said that travellers who may have more income to spend on a break will still take a holiday to Europe.

This could prove good news for those who own property in European countries such as France or Spain.

The Luxury Travel Fair was held between November 5th and 8th and gave attendees help on getting the most out of a 5-star break, including information about luxury overseas property and specialist tour operators.

Could airport measures see Florida property breaks become easier?

New airport measures which could see passengers able to check themselves in for holidays are being introduced to help airports cut back on costs and improve efficiency, it has been said.

According to the Air Transport Users Council, passengers are unlikely to have a problem with self check-in and the change could actually be of benefit to those jetting off "because they are having to spend less time at the airport checking in and it makes the whole process easier for them".

Such news could be of interest to those who regularly take a trip to Florida property and find that they have to spend a lot of time at the airport before they board their plane.

Recent figures published by the Co-Operative Travel showed that many who fly are unsatisfied with the levels of service and facilities available at airports.

In total, 58 per cent said they were not happy with airport parking and 65 per cent said that airport baggage reclaim systems are not up to scratch.

Culture vultures with Spanish property could head to art event

Those who own Spanish property in Bilbao could be interested to hear about a new exhibition which is set to open at the Guggenheim Museum in the region.

According to the Spanish tourism website, the event is set to feature more than 80 projects undertaken by architect Frank Lloyd Wright, including private commissions, work on public buildings such as theatres and other projects.

Included in the exhibition are 200 of the architect’s original drawings and sketches, as well as journals used to plan work, models of projects and photographs, which could make the event ideal for those with Spanish property in the area.

"Visitors will also be able to see videos and digital animation to make it easier to interpret the creations of Frank Lloyd Wright, who had such a far-reaching effect on the organisation of modern life," the site said.

The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is a modern art gallery and there are other Guggenheim venues in cities including New York and Berlin.

Italy property owners could find ‘gutsy food’ in the south

Those who own Italy property could find that restaurants in the south of the country offer them the chance to sample the "gutsy food" of the nation.

In an article for the Telegraph, Xanthe Clay said that while Brits love Italian food, it is the cuisine found in the north of the country that they are most familiar with.

However, when Ms Clay took a recent Italian property break to Puglia, she said that she found "some of the most gutsy food is produced further south", which could interest foodie fans looking to invest in Italy property who are unsure which part of the country to choose.

Speaking to the source, Calabrian chef Francesco Mazzei, who owns a restaurant in London, said he is keen to bring the southern Italian style of cooking to England.

According to CN Traveller, the region of Puglia "dramatically combines fairytale cottages, Baroque churches and Pagan dances".
