Rightmove Overseas Search Report – August 2012
Winter Sun Destinations Flourish
Highlights
55.9% regions seen an increase in searches since last month,
44% seen a decrease in searches and 
0.10% of destinations saw no change- Quarter of all searches for overseas property are for Spain
- Florida regains the attention of UK based property hunters
- Winter sun destinations all increase in popularity
- Portugal drops to 5th place
Commentary
Commenting on the climbers and fallers in this month’s search chart Shameem Golamy, Head of Rightmove Overseas said:
“As autumn creeps in, buyers begin to look for their winter escapes. In August we saw a significant rise in interest on the website for traditional winter sun locations like Florida and the Canary Islands. There was no change in the order of the top three with Spain, France and USA dominating the searches.
Interestingly, a quarter of all overseas property searches were for Spain. People coming back from summer holidays are often motivated at this time of year to investigate the idea of owning their own holiday home. Italy jumped up a position in to 4th place with a particular interest in the region of Basilicata. This resulted in Portugal taking a drop into 5th position.”
Charles Purdy, Managing Director at Smart Currency Exchange , said:
“August was a quiet month. The Olympics dominated and the GB team exceeded everyone’s expectations. On the currency markets little news meant that exchange rates moved within a fairly narrow range. Sterling held its own against the euro with support at the €1.26/£1 level and against the US dollar it even gained ground pushing up to US$1.59/£1, a four month high.
September will be a lot different. The European Central Bank will take centre stage as the markets hope they will lend much needed support to the southern states of the Euro zone by ensuring they can borrow at sensible interest rates. If not forthcoming we could see the euro continue its yearlong depreciation against sterling. If we see support for the euro we are likely to see it appreciate. By how much is difficult to say but given the depth of the Euro zone problems it is unlikely to be huge."
