Thousands of Brits who have sold a property in Spain over the past 12 years could be eligible for a large tax rebate from the Spanish authorities.

A recent ruling by the European Court of Justice could see Spanish property owners given back cash after paying over-the-odds in capital gains tax.

Over the past 12 years, many Spanish property owners who are local only paid 15 per cent capital gains tax on homes that they sold.

However, non-Spanish holiday home owners and Brits were sometimes charged as much as 35 per cent tax – and now these former Spanish property owners could be entitled to a large payout from the Spanish tax authority.

According to the Daily Mail, those involved in the case have estimated that people who have sold a home in Spain since 1997 may be owed an average of £13,500 in refunded tax.

Spanish property has long been popular with Brits buying homes abroad, for its good weather and close proximity to the UK.
