January blues should become a thing of the past for Scots Jason Staines and Aileen Murray, now that they have their own place in Spain they can visit to escape the UK’s miserable winters.
The married couple from Edinburgh were handed the keys to their three-bedroom duplex in the southern Costa Blanca in September 2016. They had decided to buy a second home in Spain in October 2015 and found their property during a viewing trip in July 2016.
“A friend recommended local agent HomeEspaña, so we spoke with them and the following morning managed to do about five viewings,” said Aileen. “Our agent took a note of our criteria and even included a property that needed some work, to help give us a good all-round idea of the market. Anyway, two hours later, we’d had an offer accepted on our property!”
With their property reserved, the couple were able to put everything in place to complete the purchase, guided by HomeEspaña, who also introduced them to a local builder.
Aileen’s and Jason’s duplex, which came partially furnished, is on a small gated community with a large communal pool in the friendly beach resort of Playa Flamenca, 10 minutes south of Torrevieja. Before viewing their duplex for the first time, the couple had never been to there, but had spent a night in nearby Cabo Roig.
Both Aileen and Jason work full time but are keen to use their Spanish home as much as possible, including for long weekends. They also plan to invite friends and family to stay with them, including Jason’s two children, aged 17 and 21.
Playa Flamenca is a family-oriented residential resort in the popular Orihuela Costa area. Easy to reach from the UK, Alicante Airport is around 40 minutes away by car and Murcia San Javier Airport 20 minutes.
There are two main beaches in Playa Flamenca, plus others close-by at Punta Prima to the north and Cabo Roig to the south. While Playa Flamenca has bars, restaurants and every type of amenity you might need, mostly centred in the Playa Flamenca Commercial Centre, the La Zenia Boulevard shopping centre has international designer outlets and is also very near. And there are three great golf courses at Villamartín Golf, Campoamor Golf and Las Ramblas Golf within a short drive.
