In 2003, Jan van Grinsven purchased Château les Merles with the aim of turning it into a boutique hotel. With patience, love and excellent taste, he developed the castle and the surrounding estate into a stylish oasis of tranquillity and first-class gastronomy, with 15 hotel rooms and a fantastic restaurant. Every day he takes great pleasure in serving his guests all the good things that France has to offer. On the estate surrounding the Château, Jan van Grinsven is building a limited number of detached holiday villas and apartments in three phases in cooperation with REB Projects.

Château les Merles is situated in the middle of the rolling hills of Dordogne, which are overflowing with flora and fauna. The surrounding countryside is green, wooded and hilly, and because there is no industry here the region officially has the cleanest air in Europe. Moreover, it is extremely safe. The climate is very mild, with long summers and short temperate winters. Les Merles is a stone's throw from Bergerac, while the vibrant city of Bordeaux is just one hour away.

Dordogne is the birthplace of French cuisine and offers you limitless possibilities to enjoy its culinary delights. Nearby Thiviers is France's foie gras capital, and the best truffles in the world come from Sorges, a short distance away. When the hunting season opens in the autumn, you can find delicious game dishes on the menu everywhere in the region. And as we already mentioned, the restaurant at the Château is one of the best in the region!

The region around Bergerac is called Perigord Pourpre after the skin of the grape. The region's vineyards, originally built by the Romans, border those of Bordeaux and produce very interesting wines every year. The famous Chateau Monbazillac dessert wine comes from this region, as does an entire series of high-quality red wines such as those from Pécharmant.

In Dordogne, you can still enjoy the traditional, unspoilt outdoor life. If you like cycling or walking, prepare yourself for some of the most beautiful routes in France. And if you like to be even more active, you can go mountain biking, swimming, jogging and canoeing. Of course, life in France is not complete without a languid game of jeu de boules under the sycamore trees. At the Château, you also have your own 9-hole, par 35 golf course nestled in between the plum trees and the vineyards.

Testimonials from Buyers

  • Buyer Testimonial

Since 2009 we have regularly taken short breaks at Chateau les Merles. We've returned again and again because of the pleasant atmosphere, the excellent cuisine, the beautiful surroundings and the pure air. For this reason, at a certain point we decided to consider buying a house in the Dordogne. During our search for a suitable house, we got into a chance conversation with Jan van Grinsven about the construction of a new home on the grounds of Chateau les Merles. Jan already had a construction drawing ready, and in consultation with his architect, Paul Vlemmings, the design was adapted in such a way that the house would perfectly meet our needs. We decided to build. Despite the distance between the Netherlands and France, which meant that we could only occasionally be involved with the building process, construction went well and the house was completed in 2015, exactly as we had envisioned it. We were delighted with the result then, and we're still pleased every time we return. The big advantage for us is that we don't have to worry about the house and matters such as maintenance, cleaning and rental, as all of these things are taken care of for us. Everything is ready when we arrive; all we have to do is unpack, and then we can sit down to a delicious meal prepared by Bas in the restaurant. After that, we can enjoy all of the beauty that Chateau les Merles and the surrounding areas has to offer. Maria and Léon Hartogs-Sanders.

Do we all love it? -  yes!
We had always dreamed of owning our own house in France. For several years we searched for our own little piece of paradise in the rolling countryside of the Dordogne but after several fruitless attempts - there was always a major stumbling block - too much renovation - not a good undertaking from a distance with school French, too big, too small, too remote, - we stumbled upon the exquisite boutique hotel of Chateau les Merles where we stayed, thereafter, while we pursued our dream but the more we visited the Chateau the more we fell in love with it. Situated near the picturesque town of Bergerac it was the perfect location, with the airport just 10 minutes away in the summer and Bordeaux not much more than an hour in the winter. We've also found we could easily drive there from Kent in one day, arriving in good time for dinner. It was also the perfect springboard for venturing further afield but there was also lots to do on the doorstep - cycling, horse riding, canoeing, troglodyte sites and lazy lunches in one of the numerous bastide towns. So here, right under our eyes was the perfect solution. A house with modern conveniences, where we could have some input into its final décor, a house which looked out onto the first tee and the ninth hole of a pretty and challenging golf course, a large pool with a dedicated terrace and full maintenance, cleaning and repair work, all to hand by friendly and efficient staff. It also has an excellent restaurant with perfect ambiance and delicious cuisine serving healthy, imaginative and beautifully presented food. All this topped by the choice of wines from the region where there is a multitude of vineyards selling fine wines. In the last three years all of our family has visited on several occasions and all have been equally charmed by the freedom, the personal attention and affection shown to them by Jan and Jose - the perfect hosts. So to sum up there are so many advantages: A house constructed to modern standards A first class restaurant a stroll away A tough nine hole golf course on the doorstep A large communal pool with a dedicated terrace Instant maintenance and management to hand Advice and help whenever needed and for whatever reason be it legal, medical or anything else Lock up and go with the confidence that it will be looked after and cared for It gives us time to enjoy or children and grandchildren in the summer and to enjoy the peace and tranquility of this beautiful area out of season. Do we all love it? - a resounding and whole-hearted yes!
