    Beach, Sun and Nature
    image cannot be displayed

The Gambia is a country with beaches that invite visitors to laze and linger on package tours. But there's more than sun and surf.

Small fishing villages, nature reserves and historic slaving stations are all within easy reach of the clamorous Atlantic resorts. Star-studded eco-lodges and small wildlife parks dot the inland like a green belt around the coast and The Gambia is a bird lovers' utopia: on a leisurely river cruise, you'll easily spot more than 100 species while your pirogue charts an unhurried course through mangrove-lined wetlands and lush gallery forests. You won't be able to resist wielding binoculars with the excellent network of guides.

West from the ferry terminal towards the wide Ma Cumba Jallow St (Dobson St) is a chaotic assembly of decrepit colonial buildings and Krio-style clapboard houses (steep-roofed structures with wrought-iron balconies and corrugated roofs). It's no coincidence they resemble the inner-city architecture of Freetown, Sierra Leone, as many of them still belong to families who came to Banjul from Freetown, some as early as the 1820s.

The Gambia is a wonderful beach holiday destination all year round with daily temperature highs ranging between 29°C and 34°C. Popular beaches have plenty of beach bars, restaurants and sun loungers and are never overcrowded, even in the height of the season. Golden sands line almost the entire coast and whatever the time of year you can easily find a secluded beach without a soul in sight.

    • Introduction

      TAF Holding Company Limited
      image cannot be displayed

TAF Holding Company Limited is one of the leading indigenous companies in The Gambia. It is one hundred per cent locally owned by the proprietor and General Manager, Mr. Mustapha Njie. The company was registered ten years ago as a construction firm in the name of TAF construction Company Ltd. (TCL). Upon registration of TCL, it was classified as Category C but within a period of 2 years, TCL's classification was changed to Category A by virtue of the number of projects timely completed, the scale and volume of these projects. As its first engagement, TCL took up the construction of dwelling units for private individuals and small-scaled business organizations. Its bid to compete internationally coupled with its distinguishing performance as a local contracting firm, led to an extension of the company to include four distinct divisions, each of which is as vibrant and serviceable as the other. Nonetheless the construction division remains the brainchild of TAF Holding Company and is presently engaged in Building and Civil Engineering Works.

In 1992, responding to the increase in demand for building materials and also in order to expedite its own construction activities, the building product wing of TAF Holding Company was formed and registered as TAF Building Products (TBP). In addition to the sale of quality building materials, this division serves as the regional agent for RIED STRUCTURAL STEEL SYSTEMS, a reputable supplier in the UK.

An increase in the demand for building materials will invariably always follow from an increase in the need for building services of varied classification. Given its vast experience already acquired in small-scaled buildings coupled with the trust and confidence bestowed upon it by the community, in the Estate Development wing -TAF Estates Developers (TED) was formed. It is the first Organized Estate and Developing Agency in The Gambia, which constructs and manages estates. It has successfully developed and furnished self-catering apartments for short, medium, and long-term purposes. In addition, TED develops, sells, leases or rents middle and high-income dwellings.

The increased boom in tourism development facilitated by the unlimited tourism potential of The Gambia prompted the need for the expansion of TAF Construction Company into the tourism industry in 1994. In this respect TAFBEL Maisonettes, the Tourism wing has developed a 200 bed 4-star hotel commonly known as Tafbel, built by TAF Construction and which catered for both tourists and business travelers. The company has since diverted its interest in Tafbel so as to concentrate on its core activity of construction, estate development and building materials supplies.

Over time, TCL established different business entities, which compliment each other. Each entity within TAF occupies a prominent position in its respective sector of operation. In order to streamline the management structure of all these entities, TAF HOLDING COMPANY (THC) was incorporated in 1998.

TAF Holding Company Ltd., together with its subsidiaries has over 400 Gambians under its employment and is a very strong contributor to the fruitful enhancement of the civil society. It regularly makes donations to philanthropic organizations, afford scholarships to poor and deserving students and contributes towards the development of sports and extra curricula activities.

In 2000, Taf Holding Company Limited ventured into large-scale housing development code-named "OPERATION HOUSE THE NATION". With this project, two sites were allocated to us for the development of low, middle and high-income houses.

The first site (YARAMBAMBA HOUSING ESTATE in YUNDUM) comprises of two hundred and ten (210), two and three bedroom houses being sold at $15,000 and $20,000 respectively, with all amenities such as roads, mosque, and market provided. The total project cost was $4.5 million and the company received $1.00 million as co-financing from Shelter Afrique, a Pan African Housing Finance Institution based in Kenya. The project was finished early 2004.

The second and current project is the BRUFUT GARDENS in BRUFUT, which comprises of 500 high-income houses and apartment buildings with roads, electricity, water and public amenities. The total cost of the project is $35 million and will be built in five years. Shelter Afrique is co-financing the first phase with a total sum of $1.00 million. This phase has now been completed and the second phase is already in progress. Shelter Afrique is also involved in the second phase and will is providing $1.5 million in financing with only 82 houses left to sell in this project currently.

The Chairman and CEO, Mr. Mustapha Njie, has over the years established himself as a successful entrepreneur. In the course of his business, he has received several awards and distinctions among which are the European Commission Global Business Award for Excellence and Quality (1998), The Gambia Chamber of Commerce Businessman of the Year (1992/93, 2004 and 2006) and ECOWAS honorary businessman of the year 2010. TAF Holding Co was awarded the AFRICA SMME in Construction in 2004. Mr. Njie is a founder and executive committee member of the West African Enterprise Network (WAEN), an organization of entrepreneurs from 13 West African countries whose main objectives are to develop strategies for overcoming regional trade constraints and promote business ventures among its members. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Trust Bank Limited. He was decorated with an Insignia of Member of The Republic of The Gambia (MRG) by His Excellency, The President of The Republic of The Gambia.

In 2011, Mr. Mustapha Njie formed TAF Nigeria Homes as a subsidiary company to Taf Holding Company Limited and in 2015 TAF Rwanda Homes, TAF Senegal Homes, TAF Cameroon Homes were registered in a vision to build 1million homes in sub-regional Africa within 20 years.
