People in Lesvos have kept tradition alive in towns and villages despite living thoroughly modern lives. The island of Lesbos is almost self sufficient. Skala Polichnitos is a very picturesque fishing village, located app. 4 km from Polichnitos and is considered traditionally its summer extension. Over the years people living in Polichnitos have gravitated towards the sea and Skala Polichnitos got populated all year around. Most residents are fishermen, farmers or retirees and recently foreign property buyers that appreciate the rustic character of the village.
Fringed with lush vegetation and olive groves it faces the west coast of the Gulf of Kalloni and has unparallel panoramic views in the gulf. The houses with their gardens and orchards are gathered around the little harbour which is always busy since it is surrounded by tavernas and coffee bars.
The Salt Pans of Polichnitos are located at the far end of Skala and produce the whitest salt in Europe which is harvested once yearly. The Salt Pans are also home to the flamingos and many other species of birds, which birdwatchers from all over the word come to observe every Spring & Autumn. Autumn birdwatching at Skala Polichnitos is a very rewarding experience since the Salt Pans here are much wetter than at Skala Kallonis.
The village has a thriving fishing industry, with the famous sardella (sardine) amongst other fish, being fished here and scallops , mussels and other seafood which are exported in tones. The Salt is also loaded here & shipped off for packaging and export.
It retains its traditional charm and authenticity with the natural hospitality of the villagers which has persuaded foreigners to start buying houses with land in the area.
In the months of July & August each year the Fiesta of Ouzo & the Fiesta of Trata (the sardine fishing boat) are celebrated. Dates differ each year, so check with the locals or at the Town Hall.
