Polichnitos is a small town (3.162 people) and the administrative centre of the region with the houses built in a very impressive architectural style. As you enter Polichnitos you will be welcomed by the resident white stork on top of the tall chimney of the old Olive Press, a permanent resident all year around and the mascot of the town. This building was once an olive press which has now been converted to a Conference Centre. A little further on you will find St George's Church (the patron of the town) and the 200 year old, three tiered belfry. The town has a Town Hall, Magistrates Court, Sports Ground, Police Station, Schools, Museums, Banks, ATM, Chemists, Dentists, Health Centre, Bus Station, Taxi Rank , hardware stores, grocery stores, fishmongers, butchers, bakery, hairdressers, clothing/shoe stores, and of course lots of kafeneia, cafeterias, bars. Just as you exiting Polichnitos and heading for Vatera & the beach, there is a left turning that will take you to the Thermal Springs of Polichnitos, one of two thermal springs in Lesvos, which is on of the hottest mineral springs in Europe (60 - 90 Degrees). In fact there are five springs in total but only three are in use. The bath house with the original pools built during the Turkish occupation is retained and used today (one for males & one for females). The facilities have been upgraded and improved for showering and changing. There is a refectory area where drinks and snacks are served and local products are sold. The Baths are open all year round.
