Fivizzano is a beautiful medieval walled town with a central cobbled piazza. The bustling town hosts many cultural events over the summer with concerts in the piazza and reenactments of medieval parades. With its musical heritage the town also attracts international musicians during its annual folk music festival. There is a hospital and excellent shops and restaurants in the town. Lunigiana (pronounced Loonee-janna) is a magical place to live and visit. While it remains comparatively undiscovered and unspoilt it is neither isolated nor remote. The rolling landscape is liberally sprinkled with castles of Medici or Malaspina vintage but for lovers of the coast the sea is only half-an-hours' drive away. The hills that encircle Lunigiana create and intimate and relaxed atmosphere whilst the blend of the mountains and sea are extremely inviting to those who enjoy the outdoors.
Lunigiana is special and has been likened to a magical kingdom. It is not only the breathtaking scenery with its abundance of medieval castles but you simple feel a huge sense of wellbeing radiating from the sunshine, glorious countryside, delicious food and wine, kind friendly locals and most importantly, from the sense of tradition and community amongst people here that is rarely seen in modern day life.
The golden sandy beaches around Lerici and the pebble coves of the Cinque Terre are ideal for swimming and sailing in the summer while the snow clad mountains offer skiing in the local resorts during the winter months and are each a short drive away. The area is criss-crossed with marked footpaths for walks to the hills and mountains. The airports of Pisa, Parma and Genova are all within an hours' drive.
Cinque Terre are five picturesque villages strung along the narrow coastline with pretty coves, beaches with access on foot, boat or with the local train that shuttles between the villages. Enjoy the breathtaking views along the coastline. Living here you have easy access to both Genova and Pisa airports.
East of the famed five villages of the Cinque Terre is the equally compelling Gulf of Poets, the Gulf of La Spezia given a literary nickname for its attraction to some of the world's most celebrated poets who came and sometimes died here. This legendary costal area was once the home of some of the world's most famous poets: Shelly, Lawrence, Byron, and Dickens. They, as did many artists, found inspiration from the colourful hamlets, the deep blue sea and colourful gardens.
