Ossuccio dates from pre-Roman times which is evidenced a "sarizzo votive altar" of the second century A.C. belonging to the population of "Asuciates" that gave its name to the village. In the area there was a revival of churches, such as the Roman one of St. James located in Spurano and the one of St. Mary Magdalene in the village of Ospadelatto.
On the slopes of the mountain which overlooks the city there is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Salvation. Furthermore there is a St. Benedict Monastery with a beautiful cloister. Also of importance is the church of St. Euphemia, which along with 5 other churches, all located on the Island of Comacina.
A visit to the Island Castle it is located on the old Island in the middle of the lake which can be reached by boat service and where there is a restaurant (Locanda dell'Isola) that is famous for its owner, called "Cotoletta". The Island has been inhabited since ancient times, it was the centre of many early medieval wars: it was the last refuge of Berencar the 11th century and, in 1169, the Island was the centre of a struggle between Como and Milan, which destroyed it. According to the legend the inhabitants, in part, migrated to Varenna. Most of them went to the New Island, where the St. Euphemia church as rebuilt with the same patron of the one destroyed on the old Island

Ossuccio Area Guide

Ossuccio is a tiny lake side hamlet on the western shore of Lake Como, about 40 minutes from the town of Como and 60 minutes from Milan. There are a couple of excellent restaurants (trattoria), as well as the famous Locanda del Isola restaurant on the nearby island, which is reached by taxi boat.
