Esperaza is a small market town situated to the south of Limoux in the upper Aude Valley. The town developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the arrival of the railway (which still operates between Carcassonne and Quillan) and the development of the shoe and hat making industries, commemorated in one of the towns museums. More recently dinosaur remains were found nearby which are now in display in Esperaza's other museum dedicated to the evolution of the dinosaur. The disposition and soil quality of the surrounding hills to the South and West of the town have resulted in extensive, and excellent quality vineyards. Esperaza is also regionally famous for its weekly Sunday market which takes over most of the town and features many impromptu musical and artistic performers. As well is its market town has a supermarket and filling station on its outskirts, as well as all the other usual facilities of a small town. It is about 15 minutes' drive from the naturally heated thermal spa baths is at Rennes le Bains.
