This special 24.000 m2 (six acres) property is located high in the rugged hills overlooking Molyvos (a traditional, picturesque village with many foreign visitors during spring and summer ) which is just km ( 2 miles) away, surrounded by olive groves and farming land.
It is a unique property, “one of its kind” with panoramic views of Molyvos and the dramatic medieval castle, built by the Byzantines and renovated by the Genoese Gattelusi. It is comprised of:
• A 200 m2, multi levelled ‘guest house.’ This compact building consists of ten single rooms with individual bathrooms and kitchens, as well as a main kitchen and dining room.
• a two – room house (about 50 m2) with a kitchen
• an octagonal house (approx. 80 m2) with two rooms, a kitchen and a loft that affords an exceptional view of the surrounding country side and the town of Molyvos
• A building (approx 120 m2) with a large multi-purpose room, two attached single rooms and a garage.
The total size of buildings on site is 460 m2. Further residential development is possible.
It boasts peace and tranquillity with a view totally uninterrupted by any other building structure. The landscaping intentionally excludes any asphalt roads – only natural pathways lead from one building to the other. The main road that links the property and Molyvos is paved. The main beach is just a few minutes from town and 2.5 miles (4.5 km) from the land.
The story of Karuna
The first owner bought the land in 1974 and never stopped improving it for the next 30 years. He landscaped it himself and decorated it with art materials imported from Nepal. It was used as a retreat named: ‘Karuna Retreat Centre’. It was one of the first Retreat Centres founded in Greece in the 70’s. It was run as a non-profit organization and operated during the spring and summer season as a Retreat Centre for individuals or groups coming from all parts of the world to practise yoga, tai chi or silent meditation in these natural, serene surroundings.
For several years, both teachers and students would enthusiastically make pilgrimages to Karuna for their yearly courses or seminars, always leaving with a feeling of deep satisfaction
As such Karuna was pioneering in providing more contemplative surroundings for people seeking quiet, reflective holidays or workshops combined with their time off work. It ceased trading in 2006.
About the Island
Lesbos is a beautiful, tranquil and unspoilt by mass tourism Greek island . Visitors from all over the world are enchanted by its traditional charm and hospitality. With at least 10 hours of sunshine every day of the year, Lesbos has to be the sunniest place in Europe.
It is the 7th biggest of all Mediterranean and the 3rd biggest of all Greek islands with a stretching coastline of 320 km. The island is 70 km in length, 45 km in width with a geographical mass of 1630 sq. km. Situated on the North East Aegean Sea, 180 miles from Athens and 8-10 miles from Asia Minor it is populated by about 110.000 people. Among this number there are people from all over Greece as well as 4.500 Uni students in the University of the Aegean who keep the capital Mytilini vibrant
It is the perfect destination for any traveller who wants to experience the authentic Greek island life, without being worried if there are enough things to do. People in Lesvos have kept tradition alive in towns and villages despite living thoroughly modern lives. The island of Lesbos is almost self sufficient. The variety of landscape, the award winning sand and pebble beaches of every size and description, the mild climate and long hours of sunshine all year round, the rich historical, cultural and spiritual perspective, make LESBOS an island of many options and all seasons. Lesvos Island attracts artists, nature lovers, fans of alternative/traditional living and pensioners who seek a home away from home.
Mithimna or Molyvos located 62 kilometres from the island' s capital, is one of the five ancient towns in Lesvos and a well-known tourist resort. It is famous for the Castle, the well-preserved traditional architectural features, the picturesque stone houses with the tiled roofs, the mansions, the old churches, the architectural monuments and the cobblestone lanes just right for strolling.
This charming combination of history and natural beauty has been the inspiration for many poets, writers and artists since time immemorial. Visitors to the town are enchanted by the picturesque scenery of the olive groves at the foot of the rock the top of which the medieval castle dominates. At dusk when it lights up, it is bewitching.
The main cemetery of the ancient town was situated to the south of the town wall. The graves, which have been found along the road that starts from Petra and goes to Mithimna, are a proof that this road already existed in the antiquity.
On the far side of the town, the small harbour completes this unique image. The ruins of the ancient quay show that the ancient harbour was situated at the same place, where the current one is. The small harbour with the traditional tavernas is a very inviting spot for a traveller to sample the local dishes and enjoy the ambience.
