THE AREA: The house backs on to a wonderful hilly area with walks of all lengths straight from the front door. The beaches - with a full range of watersports - are around half an hour away. The village has a tennis court and a riding centre. Further afield there are kayaking opportunities at all levels, while the nearby Regional Nature Park of the Haut Languedoc is a great area for walking and bird-watching. Skiing in the Pyrennees is 170 km away. Major attractions in the area include the medieval city of Carcassonne and the Cathar castles, the Sigean Safari Park, the Minervois and Saint Chinian wine regions, the Causses and the Cevennes, and the magnificent limestone caves. The airports of Carcassonne, Béziers, Perpignan and Montpellier are all around an hour distant, while the railway stations of Béziers and Narbonne are served by high-speed lines to Paris and Barcelona. Spain is an hour and a half away by car, Barcelona is now only two hours by train and Montpellier, cultural capital of the region with its fine museums, galleries and concert halls, an hour by car.
