The bones of the property have been maintained but the interior space has been redesigned with a contemporary touch and modern comforts and technology installed throughout. The chateau was originally built in 1476. At the beginning if the 19th century it was partially destroyed by a fire and consequently rebuilt in its current confuguration. At the end of the 19th century the chateau was occupied by Trappist nuns that made chestnut chocolate there. They rebuilt the barn opposite the château and called it 'La Commanderie', which is now the guest house. The nuns left the property in 1910. The new owner set three wood paintings dating from the 16th century in the original wood panelling which is now the 'Dali' living room, depicting the three major stages of life of Moses, which originate from the Chateau Bois-Normand in Normandy.
The etymology of the name 'Maraval' refers to the surrounding valleys that the property dominates.

Commercial Potential
The chateau is currently run as a luxury Bed and Breakfast and rented in its entirety in the summer. It opened after the completion of the renovation works in 2014 and already has a good income for its first year, offereing some of the best quality luxury accommodation in the beautiful Dordogne valley, appreciated by vistors from all over France as well as internantionally.
