The Rias Altas or "Upper Rias" is the northernmost of three sections of the costa de marisco (the Seafood Coast). It extends from the port of Ribadeo (which borders on Asturias in the North East) to Santa Cruz, La Coruña. The Upper Rias refers to the coast of the northern part of A Coruña Province and the entire coastline of the Lugo Province.
The biggest City Port of the Upper Rias is Ferrol with a rich history and is the most important naval base in North-Western Spain. Doninos, Esmelle and St. George's Beach are just some of the beaches along this coast which are highly recommended for the water quality and pristine white sand beaches. Water sports of all kinds can be enjoyed here. These beaches are also suitable for more relaxing endeavors such as walking in the dunes or sun bathing. There are hundreds of beautiful beaches in this area.
The best known beaches from Northwest to Southwest:
1. Ponzos' Beach
2. Saint Comba's Beach also known as Santa Comba
3. Saint George's Beach known as San Xurxo
4. Esmelle's Beach
5. Donino's Beach know as Doniños
6. O Vilar's Beach
7. The Frigate's Beach also known as A Fragata
8. A Grana's Beach also known as A Graña
The fishing ports along this coastline vary from quaint, little historical towns to very big commercial fishing ports.
There is much more to see in the area than just beaches. There is, for example, the national park of Fragas de Eume which is the only original Atlantic forest left in the world. Ideal for walking and seeing nature like you have never seen before. In this entire area (Rias Altas) one can make nature walk like nowhere else. One can ride horse, rent a quad, fish for trout, sea trout and salmon in the rivers. In the coastal mountains one can admire the wild horses and cows. Game is in abundance here.
Galicia is not only the most western part of Spain but also of continental Europe. Galicia is known as the emerald of Spain. In parts Galicia is mountainous in other parts hilly or nearly flat. The serene countryside is green and lush and spectacularly beautiful. Fields are surrounded by natural stone walls and trees. The seemingly endless forests and vineyards combined with pastures create a feeling of tranquility. Stress is an unknown word here. Our mighty rivers that get their water from thousands of lesser rivers and streams make their way to the ocean past our cities, villages, through mountains and countryside. Galicia is unique and will never fail to surprise the visitor. There are only few places in Europe where you can find wild horses, wild cows, wild boar, deer, wolves and bears roaming the country side.
No coastline in Europe can hold a candle to the 1.600 kilometer Galicia offers. This coastline is formed not only by great sandy grounds and steep cliffs, spectacular rock formations and white sand beaches but also by its exclusive geographic estuary-like formations called Rias. The unequalled white sand beaches vary from little secluded coves to long stretches of white sand; up to 9 km. Coastal temperatures are very different from those inland. On the coast one can grow oranges and lemons, a sign that frost is virtually unknown. Min temperature: 7 degrees Celsius. In summer temperatures can rise to well in the 30's but not for very long periods. Several ancient cultures left their mark on Galicia such as the Celts and Romans which makes Galicia very interesting to explore. Beaches and country walks are too many to mention but are there to be discovered and enjoyed.
