Description of the area
From Catania Airport, Acireale can be reached by a 25 km panoramic route that drives through a pleasant stretch of waterfront that runs through Acicastello, Acitrezza, Capomulini, up to Acireale (or drive straight to Acireale in 30 minutes through highway A18). Acicastello is a seaside village built around a picturesque square, where an ancient medieval Norman castle is perched on a rock overlooking the sea. Built by King Tancred in 1189 on the ruins of the Roman Rocca Saturnia, it became a prison during the reign of the Bourbons. Just beyond the castle, looking towards North, stand predominant both the legendary three Cyclops and Lachea Island, just in front of Acitrezza, ancient fishermen village. The Cyclops, huge stones of lava, were thrown by Polypheme, the creature with one eye only who lived in the Volcano Etna, towards Ulysses, as it is said in The Odyssey written by Omero. Walking towards the main square you can't miss visiting Saint John's the Baptist Church, patron of the village. Going up the close stairs, enter the lava rock arch entrance to get in the Casa del Nespolo Museum, Malavoglia's house. One km further you will get to Capomulini. For the locals, is the essence of Capomulini eating there seafood and fish that can not be fresher! It is touching to think that off the waters of Capo de Mulini, naval battles between Carthage and Syracuse have been fought, and some of the roman civil wars around the 42 to BC. The coastline of eastern Sicily is known both as the Riviera of the Cyclops and as the Riviera of Lemons, given the huge Cyclops in the sea and the significance presence of citrus to this area. The coastline rises, in one point reaching dizzying heights of 120 meters, known as Timpa just above the villages of Santa Maria La Scala and Santa Tecla, Stazzo and Pozzillo, in Acireale territory. Nestled between land and sea, like a precious jewel, Acireale contains artistic, natural and cultural treasures due to its baroque architecture. Situated on the famous Timpa di Acireale, between the majestic backdrop of Mount Etna and the nature reserve of the Riviera of the Cyclops, it is a great destination for scuba diving. Acireale is inextricable linked to the feast of St. Sebastian, patron saint of the city, celebrated and honored on 20th January. It is also synonymous with Carnival, Puppet Theatre and the Baths of Acireale! Take advantage of sulphurous waters that are at a pleasing 22 degrees from a volcanic source in S. Venera al Pozzo - bellissimo!
