The region of Messinia is one of several unspoilt areas of Greece, little affected by intensive tourism. The area offers extensive opportunities for sailing/cruising with numerous small harbours for summer moorings with the additional advantage of over-winter mooring/storage in Pylos and Kalamata. Akritohori is a typical rural village, boasting a cafe and a church. It is a four-hour drive from Athens airport along good roads. Kalamata, the principal town of Messinia, has an airport with seasonal easyjet and Thomas Cook flights from the UK (May till October). Other airlines from within Europe and elsewhere also fly into Kalamata airport which is just an hour’s drive away along the coast from our village. There are wide empty beaches close by and some extremely attractive small towns offering a variety of social, cultural and sporting opportunities as well as the everyday needs of the average household.

THE TWO BEST GOLF COURSES IN GREECE at Pylos and Romanos are only 30 minutes and 40 minutes respectively from Akritohori.

FINIKOUNDA, 7 minutes by car, has four long sandy beaches, the longest one being 2km offers windsurfing and sailing dinghy hire, and has a cafe and tavernas. All beaches offer safe bathing and lots of space for sunbathing. The smaller village beach is served by traditionally Greek cafes and restaurants. The village itself, with a population of only 600, has a very pretty harbour for traditional fishing boats and recreational boats: we keep our small boat there. There are seasonal presentations of traditional dance, puppetry, music and plays in the small amphitheatre at one end of the harbour.

LOUTSA, our local beach, forms a small, safe, sandy relatively secluded bay. It's even closer to Akritohori than the Finikounda beaches and is therefore easily and quickly accessible. There is a traditional Greek taverna there.

NAVARINO BAY. This large enclosed bay has a famous nature reserve at its northern end, home to a range of wildlife, including chameleons and a wide range of water birds, including flamingos. A splendid walk to a ruined castle of Nestor on a peak above gives stunning views over Voidokilia, one of the most picturesque beaches in Greece. Nearby Yialova, mentioned in Homer’s Odyssey, once a commercial port has now been tastefully converted into a tiny holiday hamlet.

PYLOS, a 25 minute drive away, is a busy small town with port and extensive marina. It has a good range of shops and cafes built around a lovely central square, shaded by ancient plane trees and surrounded by Italian style arcades. It also boasts an impressive castle. There are dentists, private health practices (e.g. chiropractor) and a small hospital/health centre with good facilities and reliable staff who provide prompt emergency service.

METHONI, 15 minutes away, is an old trading port, with Venetian links, evidence of which abounds in its beautiful castle beneath which lie beach and a sheltered harbour. Methoni has a doctors’ surgery, dentist with good local shopping, banks and post office and some good restaurants.

KORONI, 15 minutes away, is a small traditional town with harbour which rambles around a peninsula, with lovely beaches nearby. The protected turtle, caretta-caretta, have their hatching grounds here. Attractive old stepped alleyways lead up to the highest point which was once a castle, now partly occupied by monastery buildings and a church. Koroni plays host to a series of classical concerts each summer. The bustling harbour front street has numerous bars, cafes and tavernas. Doctors’ and dental surgeries are available here too.

KALAMATA the administrative capital of the area is 75 minutes away. It has an airport, port, large yachting marina, ferry terminal and motorway access to ATHENS. The centre of town has been the subject of major regeneration during the past few years and offers a wide range of shopping, eating and relaxing opportunities along its main boulevard. There is a greater variety of shops here offering designer goods and some internationally known stores such as Body Shop, Zara, Sisley, Attrattivo, LIDL and Carrefour.
