This is an extraordianary property that dates back to the 1400s, built during the reign of the duchy of lords Da Varano. Situated at the edge of what I would describe as the remnants of a quiet charming almost uninhabited hamlet with church, and old schoolhouse. It is enchanting with its sense of what and how life was in this magical part of Italy.
There is the sound of the nearby riverbed together with a stunning landscape that is more reminicent of wild Umbria than the Marche, resulting in a sensation of a peaceful medieval calm and otherworldliness.
Its history was as a posthouse (in those days carrier pigeons was a main form of passing messages) and it was used for changing horses for arduous journeys from Umbria to Marche. It originally had two towers but one was demolished in the 1800s.. one tower remains and the property has retained almost all the original features making it very rare as most of the orginal towers of which there were around 600 have deterioated or were modernised beyond recognition during the last few decades..
The total volume of the whole property is 600 m2. The main livable space is approx. 275 m2, has four large bedrooms, two bathrooms, two living rooms with original frescoes, one fresco is of Santa Lucia, and a kitchen with another two rooms. The upper floor, including the tower, with access internally and externally has 85m2 with two large bedrooms, guest bathroom, kitchen and living room with frescoes on the walls and 20 m2 loft reached by small wooden staircase inside. The house is wired for broadband, utiilities are connected. Central heating is gas and sansa which is the burning of the the detritus left over from pressing of olives, a very clever and economical ecological way of heating the house. The downstairs cantina is like a museum, untouched and is where vino cotto was made.
The tower and main house are surrounded by land of 1.30 hectares, located in the south - west of Camerino and the edge of a small village inhabited by few people and in a dominant position compared to the other buildings: the location is panoramic particular views in a south - west view of Monte Igno ml. 1430 above sea level (Monte former volcano of fire) which is part of the chain of mountains called pre-Apennines, the separation between the neighboring regions of Umbria and Marche, in the north looking at a beautiful and unspoilt valley, while eastwards is a view of the medieval town of Camerino.
The owners carried out a restoration in the mid 90s of consolidation, restoration and interior finish, which did not in any way compromise the originality of the entire building, as they used recuperated materials from old buildings and natural products found only in a few shops and specialized firms, so even with the work carried out and especially thanks to the previous owners throughout its history, handed down for centuries, this property has remained pristine without invasive interventions, and indeed, it seems to return to a time of dukes, nobility and heraldica.
Located 10 minutes drive from the university town of Camerino admired for its beauty and has all one would expect, restaurants, cafes, good shopping. The SS77 is just minutes away, making the house a half hour from the mountains and the sea. Both Ancona and Perugia airports are about 1 hour's drive. Also Umbria is close for day trips.
