Information about the North of Mallorca:
The North of Mallorca is considered one of the less exploited areas of the island with the best character. It is protected by the "Sierra de Tramuntana" (Tramuntana mountain chain) from the wind and bad weather, and here you will find a purely mediterranean atmosphere, with a mild climate, rich gastronomy and small postcard picture villages that still conserve their traditions and customs.
Its majestic coast line and the two spectacular bays (Alcudia Bay and Pollensa Bay) with beaches of white sand, the small coves with crystal clear turquoise waters and the green of the costal pine trees all make up panoramic views that have been the refuge and inspiration to many famous artists.
And in the countryside, the evergreen flora of Mallorca, mainly composed of pine, olive, holm oak and carob trees allow you to enjoy a myriad of soothing green tones that make this island deserves to be visited throughout the whole year. The clear and clean blue skies of the winter sunny days, the January sea calms, the almond blossom in February and the Easter holiday celebrations all make Mallorca an island to be visited also outside the summer season.
All of the above plus a safe and friendly environment, with world wide communication makes Mallorca an island where many people have come from all over to make their second home.
Mallorca has a fantastic communication with all the principal european airports with frequent flights in and out of the island. The motorway from Palma to Sa Pobla makes it easy to reach the North of the island in only 45 minutes from the airport. The roads being new and in very good condition make it perfect for cyclists.
Mallorca has a vast range of panoramic views. The stunning mountains "Serra de Tramutana" in the North West of the island with heights of more than 1000 m and the particular beauty of the North Coast become the perfect setting for all types of outdoor activities. The North of Mallorca is privileged to have within 15 km several high level golf courses, nautical sport zones, tennis clubs, clubs that offer biking and hiking excursions, excusions on land or at sea, horse riding, scuba diving, sailing, go karting and car and boat rentals.
Every year in the months of July and August the International Festival of Classical Music (founded in 1962 by renowned violinist Philip Newman) is celebrated in Pollensa.
There are three main museums in the North being the "Dionis Bennassar Museum" in Pollensa, the "Sa Bassa Blanca Foundation" (Yannick & Ben Jakober) in Alcudia and the "Pollentia Roman Ruins" in Alcudia.
Holidays and Festivities
To get to know the people and their customs the best way is to join in on their holidays and festivities that are held all year round. The main holidays being the following:
-Sant Antoni which is celebrated around the 17th of January in most of the towns and villages on the island but Sa Pobla being the town that celebrates the most. They celebrate with bonfires, fireworks, and "ximbombadas" (a typical Majorcan way of music and singing). Other towns such as Artá celebrate starting the day off with a typical "es berenar" a mid morning snack of hot chocolate and ensaimada all washed down with moscatel or "mesclat". They then take to the streets where demons dance and run. In the evening, they gather around the bonfire to sing songs often of rude context, but all is permitted on this special night of demons and fire!!!!
-Easter week (March-April) here in Mallorca is not only celebrated for religious purposes but is a holiday full of traditions that each town celebrates in its own special way. Starting from the Sunday before ("Domingo de Ramos"), where the palms are blessed and the Procession of the Entrance of Jesus in Jerusalem is commemorated and up until Good Friday, there are celebrations every day with people lining the streets to see the processions as they come out of the church and are paraded around the villages. In Pollensa, on Good Friday, there is a very mystical and powerful procession of the body of Jesus taken down the 365 stone steps of the "Calvary Hill". The celebrations in Artá are also highly recommended.
-Saint Peters day, the 29th of June, is a big holiday for Alcudia as Saint Peter is the patron saint of this town and of the fishermen. The boats in the harbour all follow each other out to sea, decorated and dressed with palm leaves. During the week there are parties and celebrations finishing on the 29th in the evening with a big spectacular firework display payed for by the local council.
-"La Patrona of Pollensa" (from the 26th of July until the 2nd of August) which is the patron saint of the Mother of Christ. Pollensa celebrates its "moors and christians" holiday to commemorate the battle of the 30th of May in the year 1550 which was lead by christian Joan Mas who was victorious over the pirates of Dragut!
-"Mare de Déu d'Agost" (from the 6th until the 15th of August). Can Picafort celebrates Mother of Christ holiday. Traditionally for nearly 80 years they have celebrated in a similar fashion to that of Colonia Sant Jordi, freeing ducks which up until a few years ago they used live ducks but now they use rubber ducks instead. This particular party ends also with a spectacular firework display.
