Records indicate that the property was founded as a convent by the Emperor Charlemagne in the early 9th Century. It was used as a refuge for Cathar women during the Albigensian crusade of the 13th Century. The original convent was destroyed during the 100 years war, but was rebuilt again as a convent in 1322.
