About the island
Lesbos is a beautiful, tranquil and unspoilt by mass tourism Greek island . Visitors from all over the world are enchanted by its traditional charm and hospitality. With at least 10 hours of sunshine every day of the year, Lesbos has to be the sunniest place in Europe.
It is the 7th biggest of all Mediterranean and the 3rd biggest of all Greek islands with a stretching coastline of 320 km. The island is 70 km in length, 45 km in width with a geographical mass of 1630 sq. km. Situated on the North East Aegean Sea, 180 miles from Athens and 8-10 miles from Asia Minor it is populated by about 110.000 people. Among this number there are people from all over Greece as well as 4.500 Uni students in the University of the Aegean who keep the capital Mytilini vibrant
It is the perfect destination for any traveller who wants to experience the authentic Greek island life, without being worried if there are enough things to do. People in Lesvos have kept tradition alive in towns and villages despite living thoroughly modern lives. The island of Lesbos is almost self sufficient. The variety of landscape, the award winning sand and pebble beaches of every size and description, the mild climate and long hours of sunshine all year round, the rich historical, cultural and spiritual perspective, make LESBOS an island of many options and all seasons. Lesvos Island attracts artists, nature lovers, fans of alternative/traditional living and pensioners who seek a home away from home.
Agios Focas is a peninsular located at the end of the very long Vatera Beach to the west. After crossing the little bridge over the Almyropotamos River, where you can see turtles swimming around, you will be on your way to the peninsular of Agios Focas with the small harbour... The road is a recently surfaced road (apart from a small stretch before the bridge) that makes the travelling easy .
On the way there you will see on your right the little Church of Agia Ekaterina next to a Christian Basilica and a little further on the left the Achilles Well where the famous general Achilles watered his troops when he camped in Lesvos after his famous quarrel with Agamemnon.
Once you reach the harbour, on the hilltop to the right you can see the ruins of the temple dedicated to Dionysus dating from the first century BC. Next to it is the small church of Agios Focas. I can think of nothing better than sit in the sheltered narthika in front of the little church and admire the blue expanse of the Aegean Sea or the golden red sunset.
In the cosy little harbour (at the taverna of Dimitris) you can eat freshly caught fish and other delicacies while looking out over the sea to Vatera. The harbour is home to fishing boats of various sizes, since a lot of the locals’ fish all year around. At the far end of the harbour there is a small beach, almost private since it is only used by the locals who have houses at Agios Focas.
The coastline over the hillside is rough and rugged with lots of rocks in the sea, which is great for snorkelling, scuba diving and line fishing. The headland is also a favourite spot for birdwatchers that arrive in the spring and autumn to spot the sea birds and see the dolphins dancing in the surf.
In resent years it has become very popular to acquire plots of land (mainly olive groves) in the corridor between Vatera and Agios Focas to built private homes. This is expected to increase since plots of land in Vatera are hard to find these days and Agios Focas is rather special and more private.
