This luxurious oasis of comfort and delight is perfectly placed in the quaint traditional village of Megalochori. The mansion is just a short stroll from the village’s picturesque square and Venetian church bell towers, along a narrow meandering footpath with distant sunny vineyards. Unwind beside the cool hues of the pool, surrounded by vibrant colour flowers, within the privacy of the walled courtyard. Enjoy gourmet meals in the shade of the natural wood pergola or beneath the countless stars above the upper terrace. From here, the views of Megalochori’s famous vineyards and the Aegean Sea on the horizon will leave you breathless. The property is the perfect place for groups of friends or family wanting to experience the many rhythms of the island in comfort and style or to accommodate a special event or wedding. It served as a winery and cellar (or “canava”) at the turn of the century. While Megalochori is still known for having most of Santorini’s vineyards, even more of Santorini’s wine production took place here in the past.
The original structure has been sensitively renovated, preserving the layout and other features as creative design elements, relics of the building’s important role in Santorini history. The sunken cylindrical troughs visible on the floor, which now act as unusual lighting features, were actually once used for distilling the wine after the grapes were pressed. The beautiful organic shape and proportions of the smooth walls, vaulted ceilings and arched openings tell the story of the canava and how it was constructed by carving into the soft pumice stone earth of the village hills. Another notable feature of the mansion is its natural ambient interior temperature. The natural insulation of the earthen walls of the space regulated the temperature of the canava year-round, to help preserve the wine stored in barrels. Today, this natural insulation continues to produce an advantage for the mansion, maintaining a constantly cool interior environment, even on the hottest summer days.
The house is arranged over one floor, covering a total area of 250 sqm. The house is accessed through the open patio. The door opens to the foyer which connects in an open continuous space with two sitting areas and the dining area. There is access to the kitchen and a bathroom. The rustic terracotta kitchen is fully equipped with modern appliances and is also accessible from the patio. From the sitting room we gain access to the four bedrooms and the large bathroom.
