This 150m fifth floor apartment is in a modernist building built in 1890. It is what the locals call a 'piso pasante' or a pass through apartment due to running from the front of the building to the back.
It is a 'through apartment', which means it has openings both at the back of the building and on its facade. Like so many properties in Barcelona it enjoys colourful mosaic tiled floors, traditionally made interior and exterior woodwork features and the sought after vaulted Catalan ceilings.
A Bright Modernist Apartment
Imagine owning something dating from the 1890s. A true example of modernist architecture. The building, which dates back to the end of the 1800's, has maintained many of its original elements, and this, alongside its typical construction features, means that it has been catalogued as a heritage site in the city of Barcelona. It is also part of the Conservation sector of the Eixample and registered in the Special Sector of calle Girona.
Like the grand majority of residential buildings in the Ensanche - the area where the city was expanded at the beginning of the last century - it is centred around a large communal staircase, and is well ventilated by its interior courtyard from which you can access two apartments per floor. The building features the classic 'piso pasantes', which are apartments that have an opening at both the front and back of the building.
The buildings facade, which is southwest facing, has a well organized and thought out composition. The ground floor, which has the highest ceiling, acts as a sort of podium for the rest of the floors, which each have openings one above the other, and each of these are intricately decorated with typical modernist lintels, and decorative supporting corbels carved out of stone. Each of these openings also has a beautiful wrought iron railing.
This apartment, located on the fifth floor of the building, still has its beautiful mosaic tiled floors in great condition. Wooden beams support each floor, and these too have maintained great form, leaving the space with the typical Catalan Vault finish ceilings. The interior organisation of the apartment provides two great possibilities, the first one is to have bedrooms at the front of the building, nearer to calle Girona, and this allows for a large living room/dining room area which would receive all the morning sun, or simply vice versa, creating a living area at the buildings facade in order to benefit from the afternoon
