Lagos is a municipality at the mouth of Bensafrim River and along the Atlantic Ocean, in the Barlavento region of the Algarve, in southern Portugal.

The main town of Lagos sees during the summer months its normal increase in residents, due to the influx of visiting tourists and seasonal residents. While the majority of the population lives along the coast and works in tourism and services, the inland region is sparsely inhabited, with the majority of the people working in agriculture and forestry. The city centre is sculpted with traditional architecture and colours from the region.

Lagos is still a small city, you can pretty much walk everywhere, it is one of the most visited cities in the Algarve and Portugal, due to its variety of tourist-friendly beaches (they vary in shape and style, from long sandy beaches to almost private ones hidden by cliffs), rock formations, bars, restaurants and hotels, renowned for its vibrant summer nightlife and parties. There is a bus and a train station to take you to other cities and taxis are abundant. Walk to the beautiful sandy golden beaches.

Lagos is also a historic centre of the Portuguese Age of Discovery, frequent home of Henry the Navigator and his historical shipyard. The harbour in the morning is full of activity. If you like to wake up early, don't miss it. Also the fish market is an interesting spot. In 2012, travel website TripAdvisor, classified Lagos as the number 1 travel destination, on a list of "15 destinations on the rise" worldwide.
