About São Brás de Alportel (closest town)

São Brás, like so much of the Algarve, was a village back in Roman times, later being inhabited by the Moors. It's the actual birthplace of the Moorish poet Ibne Ammar who wrote during the 12th century. Because of its beauty and seasonal weather, it was a favorite retreat for the wealthy. The area first earned its living in the production of cork but in later years, much of the cork business moved out of the area. Being industrious, the people of Sao Bras became prosperous again catering to the tourist industry and their beautiful handicrafts.

São Brás is now a fantastic mixture of the old and new, dotted with low bright, white Algarvean homes among the grander merchant abodes from its prosperous past. In the older part of town, you'll find charming, cobbled streets filled with shops and cafes nestled between the homes. As you wander a little further away from the church area, the avenues broaden and you'll start to see contemporary apartments starting to replace the more traditional white washed homes.
