"Our house in Cortona has a story, a very long story, as it is probably close to 800 years old. We being the current owners only know its most recent history, but it is on all the old maps. David and I are from San Francisco CA. We had raised our daughters in an old house, old for California, 1885, in Sausalito. There for 33 years we did a beautiful modern renovation of an old grand dame of the city. In a terrible state of repair, it looked out to the mountains and the Bay.
When it was done and our daughters were out of college we looked to Italy.We found and bought the property in 2007. After our third trip looking all over Tuscany at country houses, villas and ruins we found it in the oldest part of Cortona. It looked on the surface like a fine house just in disrepair. No one had lived here for 2 years. The garden area was an abandoned vegetable patch. The entry court very basic, doors and windows shuttered as usual for empty Cortona Houses. Inside the 13 windows gave a great quantity of good light which was very encouraging.
Upon further inspection after we made the purchase we found many structural problems and changes that had to be addressed. With a great engineer, the help of a local geometra, and Davidʼs architectural designs for the house, we set to work on applications to begin the restoration process.
It took three years from beginning to move-in on March 31st, 2010. All three floors had to be completely gutted leaving an empty shell, open like a large cathedral. The stone walls were in very bad shape and needed major reinforcement and all the floor and roof beams had to be replaced. While we were required to maintain the historic exterior, our idea was to create a light-filled modern interior while still respecting the traditional structural materials and methods. An Italian made modern and dramatic open stair well under a skylight is central to the circulation and affords an openness uncommon in similar kinds of Italian houses.
It took about 1 and 1/2 years to restore the structure after the first year of applying for permissions. When we moved in there was only basic plumbing and heating, no furnishings, only the new stairway and the pavimento were complete. We set about putting in the kitchen cabinets and all the cabinets for each bathroom, followed by the banquette in the
kitchen and the seating and storage in the first floor. Simultaneously we built in beds in the bedrooms, mirrored closets, and under bed storage. This took another 2 years. Then gradually we added many hand built details in the years that followed.
The garden too became a great project. It faces South so gets wonderful sunlight. We envisioned a place for gatherings on a long pietra serena table which was supported by the steel beam that had been the support of puntelle (huge steel beams) for bracing the exterior wall during the most precarious part of the reconstruction. This was followed by hedges for privacy and grass. There was no garden, no plantings, nothing in 2007. Gradually the garden grew into a lovely space as the pergola and wisteria were added, steel boxes for tomatoes, flowers, herbs, and roses. And decorative pots for other plantings. Now when you enter the gate you enter a private garden that is rather large for Cortona.
David, a seasoned architect, who enjoys building everything he can, designed and built in everything inside the house. We like to say I did the garden and he did the interior. It is a hand made house created by us together, built on its medieval roots, the stone walls themselves. This 'quartiere' of Cortona has to be the best part of historic Cortona - very peaceful very quiet and great views. Yet you are 5 minutes away from a wonderful selection of restaurants and bars shops and museums. Simply a short walk. Or a longer walk thru the natural beauty of the Cortona countryside;
either way just steps from the front door. All seasons are spectacular here and all enjoyable to live. Outdoor dining
is dependable 5 months of the year breakfast lunch and dinner. My favorite are candle light dinners during the summer. Either just us or up to 14 friends can enjoy a moon light dinner with the great italian wines, meats,
cheeses and produce all grown right here in Tuscany.
