Denia, Alicante, 03700 Where is Denia? Denia is situated half way between Alicante and Valencia Airports in the car it is approximately 1 hour drive to either airport. The main AP7 motorway junction 62 sign posted Denia, Javea and Ondara CV725 takes you into Denia town. Tram: There is a tram that runs from Alicante to Denia, this is a beautiful coastal route and the scenery is quite breath-taking. Bus there is a bus service from Alicante and Valencia to Denia the main company is called: ALSA, or from Alicante airport called Benniconnect.com. Taxi from the airport can be expensive however there are taxis that are much cheaper when you get to know people in the town. This town is very well connected with transport. The Town Built around the historical castle and beautiful buildings with stunning architecture makes Denia a pleasure to walk around. From the castle the views are spectacular over the marina and up the coastline to Valencia. Shopping: the main high street is lined with London Plane Trees which at every time of year are beautifully maintained, there are an abundance of shops: shoes, handbags, jewellery, gifts, clothes, banks, bars, restaurants, thriving town with pretty much everything you need. Marina has mooring with beautiful yachts and has the equipment to lift the larger yachts of 70ft which makes it a perfect place for the sea sportsman or woman. Around the marina is a variety of restaurants and most of them are open all year round. You can charter a yacht and book a fishing trip. From the Port you can take a ferry to take you to Ibiza, Palma de Mallorca and Formentera which are just a few hours away. As a foot passenger it is very cheap. Also guided tours, hiking and cycling routes around the mountain if you are an active person. There is a touristic train which takes you to beautiful places around the town. Buses from the port to kilometres of sandy beaches and to Las Rotas ending at a very popular restaurant called Mena, specialized in PAELLAS and sea food. Food The main street for food is called Carrer Loreto here you will find a superb selection of restaurants, tapas bars, exquisite food at La Seu restaurant and tasty tapas at Taberna Seville. There are of course more than just the two restaurants but these are my favourites. For a good Indian I go to Kathmandu which is just a short walk along the coast road. Excellent value and reasonably priced. Markets Various markets are in Denia, the main market is by the portside at the bottom of the main high street this is on a Friday. At different times of the year they have medieval market. Fish market is daily in the late afternoon. Beaches The beaches are all BLUE FLAG which means they are safe to swim in. A variety of water sports in designated sections such as paddle surfing, kite surfing, surfing, kayaking, canoeing, and for the beach lover who likes peace and quiet there are literally kilometres of sand to sun bath on. In the summer months there are life guards, pop up bars and sun loungers to hire for 10€ a day. With the Mediterranean breeze the beach is a great place to spend the day and a high factor sun cream is always recommended. Nature Reserve Les Rotes is a nature reserve with no boats aloud and has a variety of sea life to see. Snorkelling and scuba diving is very popular in this section of Denia this part of the coast is protected including the natural dunes, caves, plants and wildlife. A foot path allows you walk from Denia marina all the way to the lighthouse which is a few kilometres, the majority is flat and there is wheel chair access. Along this route are some traditional restaurants and bars so refreshments along the way make it a very pleasant walk. Montgo National Park and Mountain The backdrop for Denia is this Spectacular Mountain and national park. The Montgo Natural Park declared in 1987, covers an area of 2117.68 ha and rises to 753 meters. Witnessed the passage of man from ancient times has a high cultural and archaeological value. Noted for its more than 650 species of flora, among which are endemic as Carduncellus dianius. The Montgo reaches the sea at Cape San Antonio, which at his feet is home to the Natural Reserve of the seabed that bears his name, declared in 1994 by the importance of its funds and the biodiversity that they contain. Forming this set, one of the most spectacular scenery of the Valencian coast. Walking routes are all signposted and are all different levels of difficulty and time. Fiestas dates vary so please check with the local tourist information centre. JANUARY 5th The Three Kings - Procession and presentation of presents to the children. JANUARY 26th Pilgrimage to the hermitage of Saint Paula. FEBRUARY - dates vary, usually second week Carnival - Floats, processions, street entertainment, children's activities, fireworks and dancing to live music. MARCH dates vary, usually 16th - 19th FALLAS - The traditional Valencian festival of Saint Joseph the carpenter. Originally a contest amongst carpenters to create an effigy of the Saint, it has escalated to become one of the most spectacular fiestas of the calendar year, with municipal districts competing for the prize for the best papier mache monument. Each year the monuments get bigger and better with more and more money invested in creating incredible 50-100ft high Disney-type cartoon depictions of both current event and political characters together with fictional figures. Hundreds of thousands of Euros are spent each year in building these monuments which are all burnt in the final ceremonial act of the celebrations. Festivities include, processions with participants wearing elaborate traditional costumes, street entertainment, fireworks and live music. The largest fiesta of this kind is held in the city of Valencia, where up to 300 massive monuments block the busy streets of the capital and commercial life comes to a halt. Here a 150ft high statue of the Virgen Mary is built out of flowers brought by participants of a day long procession through the city streets. This is a fiesta you will never forget. MAY - second Sunday Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados - Religious procession in honour of the Virgin of the defenseless persons. Fiestas in Jesus Pobre - small village just outside Denia which include dancing in the streets to live music and bull-running (see below). JUNE Throughout the summer there are many fiestas. The dates vary but here are some of the main ones. Pilgrimage in honour of the Virgin Rocio. Fiestas in Santísima Trinidad Street. 20th - 24th Bonfires of Saint John plus a pilgrimage to the hermitage. 28th - 29th Fiestas in San Pedro Street. Fiestas in La Pedrera district. JULY Fiestas of the Holy Blood - Floats, concerts, open-air music festivals, fireworks - and also bull-running. BULL-RUNNING "BOUS A LA MAR" The famous bull running event is held in many towns at different times of the year all over Spain. Large, generally aggressive bulls are let loose in designated streets to chase after those who think they are fast enough to jump out of their way, run behind the many wooden barricades or into the steel cages set up for their protection, before they get gored. Not for the faint hearted, and definitely best left to those with more experience as it is not as easy as it looks. The bulls are very fast and many people - usually foreigners - get hurt, and occasionally killed each year due to them tripping and falling before they manage to get to safety. These bulls have large horns, and will attack through fear. Hundreds of people attend the events, sitting upon makeshift platforms above the streets or standing within the steel cages. It can become rather noisy with everyone shouting and jeering at the bulls who naturally feel trapped and we all know how a cornered wild animal reacts to this kind of situation. The bull-running in Denia is held at the harbour where there is a small half bullring
