Another place not to be missed is the beautiful cape of Kaliakra which cuts into the sea with a two-kilometre long wedge and closes a huge horseshoe-shaped bay. The "Kaliakra" Natural Reserve was announced in 1960 and it currently has an area of 687.5 dca with wild steppes and impressive coastal cliffs, some up to 70 m high. The flora numbers over 400 species. 47 of them are rare and threatened with extinction. Kaliakra is among the few places in Europe where the rose-coloured starling, the black wheatear, the stone curlew, the Isabelline wheatear, the shag and the Alpine swift nest.
