EVENTI: Il FESTIVAL DEI DUE MONDI (Events: The Festival of Two Worlds (also known as the "Spoleto Festival"), founded in 1958 by master composer Gian Carlo Menotti, who with his plays, dance, concerts, exhibitions and Spoletocinema, is an international event held here. After the death of Menotti, in 2008, the festival has been organized and directed by Giorgio Ferrara, with the TEATRO LIRICO SPERIMENTALE, (Experimental Theatre opera), an opera competition since 1947, the winners of which bring to the stage works of operatic repertoire and contemporary musical theatre.
Every August, there is the SPOLETO ESTATE, (Spoleto's summer festival) which is a series of cultural, music and entertainment events that has often seen many famous celebrities. This is as well as the MAMA UMBRIA INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL, held in the nearby hamlet of Bazzano curated by La MaMa etc of New York, founded by Ellen Stewart. Since 1995 Spoleto has hosted the annual PREMIO NAZIONALE PER IL CORTOMETRAGGIO SOCIALE NICKELODEON.
(The National Nickelodeon Award for the Best Short Social Film) every December. And since 1996, in April/May, the FESTIVAL PIANISTICO DI SPOLETO, (The Spoleto Piano Festival), organized by the Musici Artis Umbria.
Since 1999 the EVENTI DI FINE ANNO (The New Year Events) has been a regular feature here. At Christmas time the town organizes cultural activities, especially New Year events. 2003 saw Spoleto host in May, now every year, the SETTIMANA INTERNAZIONALE DELLA DANZA, (The International Week of Dance), which was moved here from Perugia and Rieti before that. This event aims to search and promote new young rising stars of classical and modern dance which has been directed ever since by Paolo Boncompagni. In September 2004, LE STELLE EUROPEE DEL GUSTO (The European Stars of Taste) has also been held as well as 2005 saw enogastronomy of the VINI NEL MONDO, (The World's Wine), a showcase located in the town's cellars of the oldest wines from over 160 wineries from Italy and around the world. In 2008, the world record was smashed as part of the event, for the largest glass chalice in the world: the chalice, a unique piece designed and made by master glassblower Massimo Lunardon Vicenza was 2.03 metres in height, 48 cm in diameter and 3 cm in thickness. It was then entered in the Guinness Book of World Records, and is now on display in the Civic Gallery of Modern Art in Spoleto. 2007 saw the enogastronomy of the SPOLETO TIPICA (The typical food of Spoleto), with the typical food markets held at the weekends between 1st and 11th of November. SPOLETO A COLORI (Colourful Spoleto) is on for three or four evenings from April 25 to the 1st May every year.
