The Region of Liguria
Liguria is situated along the Italian Riviera, bordered by France to west, Piedmonte to the north and Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany to the east. As a popular destination for tourists from both Italy and abroad, it is known for its beautiful beaches, forested hills, picturesque towns and quality of food. It boasts a 350 kilometre long coastline dotted with coves of and beaches. It is home to beautiful unspoiled nature in the forested hills and mountains and is where you can enjoy hiking, cycling or a swim in the pristine rivers. The hills and mountains are a popular countryside destination.
The region is characterized by its geography. Boarded by the Ligurian sea to the south and the Alps and Alpini mountains to the north, it is know as the region where the mountains meet the sea. Liguria's land is 70% forested and its Natural Reserves cover 12% of the land. The way in which these mountains are situated protects this region from continental weather and creates a very mild climate year-round, with plenty of sunny days. It is considered to have one of the most comfortable climates in Europe. The average winter temperatures range from 7 to 10 C (45-50 F), and summer temperatures average from 23 to 24 C (73 to 75 F), with extreme temperatures being virtually non existent.
There are many small, local boutique wineries as well as small production, high quality olive oil makers in the region. The famous Pesto (Genovese) originates from the area, as do other famous dishes. The region is well connected with a main motorway (highway) which runs the length of the coastline from Nice (France) to Savona, Genoa, La Spezia and Tuscany as well as to Milano and Torino. Liguria's location makes it a perfect home base for exploring Europe, with France right next door, and even Switzerland, Austria and Germany are only a half a days drive away.
With its beautiful coastline, diverse nature, great local cuisine, and wonderful climate, Liguria provides something for everyone.
