Saint Tropez:
On the shore of the deepest gulf on the Cote d'Azur, the small port of St Tropez, dominated by its citadel became popular as a stopover for artists during their summer European trips. First came painters such as Paul Signac, soon joined by Matisse, Bonnard, Marquet…do not miss their paintings in the St Tropez museum. Now St Tropez owes its worldwide fame essentially to film stars and particularly to Brigitte Bardot whose family house is located rue de la Miséricorde. The cult scenes from "And God… created woman" were shot at La Ponche.

The most charming area in St Tropez is between the port and the citadel and is where fishermen and craftsmen used to live. Its narrow streets snake about the square before the town hall, where you will see the turret of the former Château de Suffren (16C). Rue de la Ponche leads to a former fishing port. You can get a real taste of the old St Tropez here.

The old port is certainly the most famous spot in St Tropez, where the summer traffic makes driving difficult. If, by some miracle, you find a café table outside Sénéquier, passers-by will stare at you in an attempt to work out which celebrity is hiding behind the sunglasses! Shiny yachts are moored so as to best show off their luxurious cabins… this is the kingdom of appearances and it is fun! Off season, however, the port regains all of its tranquil charm.
There are many more places to discover in St Tropez, such as the adorable Place aux Herbes square, at its best in the morning, when it is taken over by market stalls, or Place des Lices where you can enjoy a drink watching the "pétanque" players before going out to restaurants.

Saint Tropez is also the mecca of watersports and hosts annual regattas and rallies of the most beautiful yachts, such as "Les voiles de Saint Tropez".


The St Tropez peninsula is renowned for its idyllic beaches such as plage des Salins, plage de Tahiti or a stone's throw away from Ramatuelle, the famous beach of Pampelonne. Huddled together and spiralling upward, Ramatuelle's houses form a defensive architecture typical of old Provençal villages: winding, narrow streets straddled by vaults and arches. In summer the village, isolated on a hill, among scrub and vines, is transformed into a bustling seaside resort with its festivals.

From Saint Tropez heading south to Bormes-les-Mimosas, the cornice des Maures is a magnificent scenic road for touring. The Massif des Maures mountains stretches from Hyères to St Raphaël, with emerald-green vegetation reaching between the sea and the Gapeau and Argens valleys. Discover numerous resorts, their viewpoints and charming landscapes. The interior was long isolated and remains wild. It is home to interesting sites such as the village of Grimaud, Verne Monastery and the villages of Collobrières and Bormes-les-Mimosas.

Next to St Tropez, Grimaud is a typical perched village with its ancient Provençal houses set high up in the mountains. The Église St-Michel, a Romanesque church, is also worth a visit for its 19C interior frescoes. Ruins of the feudal castle ramparts (11C), lovely view over the Maures and Port Grimaud.

For nature lovers, the "gorges du Verdon" canyon (90 km) are definitely a must.
To enjoy le Verdon you must take the Route de la Corniche Sublime which begins at Comps-sur-Artuby, a former stronghold of the Templar Knights. The village is at the foot of a rock crowned by the 13C Eglise St André where the views over the Artuby gorge and the Provençal landscape are really worth the climb. The road then heads for the amazing Balcons de la Mescla overlooking the Verdon. Continue on past the two Tunnels de Fayet which command a breathtaking view of the curve of the canyon, turning into the Falaise des Cavaliers. The latter towers above the precipice between 250 and 400m high and stretches out over 3km. Then the road leads into the Cirque de Vaumale offering splendid views on the way out. On your way back to St Tropez, the turquoise Lac de Ste-Croix into which the Verdon flows, and the attractive village of Moustiers-Ste-Marie, renowned for its fine ceramics are well worh a stop.
