Located in the parish of Ribeira Brava, ?the land of the valley?.
Whoever arrives in Ribeira Brava nowadays would hardly believe that the stream of water that comes down the valley between high mountains has been tempestuous in the past. So angry and plentiful during the rainy season that the locals started to call it naturally Ribeira Brava, especially because of the damages it caused in its path until it reached the sea.
But now times have changed. The fierceness is long gone, which led to a rapidly developing of the immense valley, increasingly shrinking the stream bed. The stream begins at an altitude of about 327 meters and has an eight miles course. A route that crosses the beautiful valley, surrounded by high mountains of unparalleled beauty.
In the places that have not suffered human intervention, its bed houses several specimens of willows and other trees.
This parish is today is the center of the county of the same name, which was elevated to town a few years ago.
It is one of the oldest parishes of Madeira, populated mainly by the Portuguese, founded around 1440.
Formerly a passing land, nowadays it captivates travelers to stop and staying awhile in their bars, restaurants and terraces. Ribeira Brava?s main attractions considering historical and cultural heritage, is the Church of S. Bento, considered one of the best preserved in Madeira. It maintains the characteristics of the sixteenth century, despite the restoration and reconstruction that has suffered over time.
Its basin carved in stone, the pulpit decorated with wild animals, the wooden virgin image, the altar and the church tower, clad in tiles and with a clock at the top, make it one of the most interesting and beautiful in the island.
In Ribeira Brava takes place a very popular festival in Madeira: São Pedro, during which there is a procession of boats.
It has about 6588 inhabitants, over an area of 17.5 km2 (4324 acres).
The pearl of the Atlantic has one of the most perfect climates in the world. It is never too hot, averaging maximums of 24ºC during the summer months and minimums of 17ºC during the winter. This benevolent climate enhances every leisure pastime, be it golf, mountain walking, touring, hiking and making it an excellent retirement or second home destination. With quality of life, no crime, low living costs, natural beauty, the hospitality and kindness of the people, the Carnival Festival and spectacular fireworks show all make Madeira THE mecca island of the Atlantic, attracting many foreigners. A variety of languages are spoken such as English, German, Spanish, Russian, Italian, Finish etc.
