Denia was, and still is, a harbour town and shipping port (for oranges, citrus and other local agricultural produce), but first and foremost, Denia is known as a fishing port, which has been its status for generations. Many places along the coast try to portray an image of a "charming fishing village with good restaurants which only use fresh ingredients," but Denia certainly plays to its strengths in this respect, and the same can't be said of all the coastal towns on the Costa Blanca. The city receives fresh fish from the Mediterranean every day, and the first class restaurants in the city buy their fresh seafood from the daily fishing auction.
Denia has a Port and Marina packed with beautiful boats and fabulous restaurants, including the Michelin-starred 'Quique Dacosta' Denia´s 300+ restaurants base their dishes on the best the sea has to offer, combined with produce from the Valencia region, and the result is infamous well beyond Denia town's limits. The best known dishes are probably the famous Denia red prawn and a rice dish without comparisons - arroz a band. All tastes are catered for in Denia and it is without doubt a culinary highlight of the region. One of the most visited tourist attractions of Denia is the castillo (castle). The castle built in the 11th and 12th century offers a wonderful view around the sea, the city and inland. Within the castle you will find the Palau del Governador with its museum. Along with the other interesting museums in Denia, the Museo Etnologico will give you further details on the rich history and culture of Denia.
You should also do some shopping along the main road of Calle de Marques de Campo they have some wonderful shops, and many traditional bars and restaurants, for refreshments. Spain loves its fiestas and traditions. Denia has its own bull run, 'Toros en el Mar', where local young men are chased by bulls through the city streets, and lead them into the harbour swimming pool. In August, the 'Moros y Christianos' is held, and early in the Spring is 'Fallas' - celebrated across the region with lots and lots of fireworks. Denia is generally known to be one of the towns in Spain who holds the most fiestas per year! Denia is a medium sized town, primarily populated by Spaniards and some foreigners who live there permanently, but is ideal for year round living.
In the hillsides around Denia and along the coast you will find some of Costa Blanca's most beautiful, and the varying landscape in the area allows for properties with spectacular sea views. Denia has both a sandy beach, and a rocky beach that run along the coast for 24 kms. The entire area around Denia is especially fertile and this lush greenery distinguishes its from most of the other areas you find along Costa Blanca.
Behind Denia you will find the Montgo mountain which is a nature reserve. In this area you can experience great hiking and admire the beautiful nature.
Denia is situated approximately halfway in between Alicante (city) and Valencia, which both have their own international airport with direct routes to all major European cities- roughly one hour's drive from each city on the AP7 motorway. Denia lies in the north end of Costa Blanca which is characterised by its beautiful, fertile and a diverse nature with rugged terrain and significantly less developments than other places on the Costa Blanca.
Have the most experience and the best local knowledge in Marina Alta (Calpe to Denia), an area we without reservations will label the most beautiful area in Costa Blanca. In Marina Alta, you will find; better properties, a higher quality, better community and social environment, better and more realistic prices and a lifestyle and quality of living which is superior to the rest of Costa Blanca. This particular property is a good example, but is just one of many similar properties we can show you in Marina Alta.
