Sala Comacina is located opposite the Island Comacina which is famous not only for being the only island of the Lake but especially for the celebration of the St. Giovanni festival which every year in June attracts many tourist for its exceptional and unique fireworks display.
The village, situated on the western shore of lake Como, at the foot of Monte Costone, is one of the most characteristic villages of the lake. Sala comacina, in the last century, was consider an important centre of residence evidence by the many villas built in the area and particularly along the coast. The promontory, called the "Puncia" was formed by the debris of the river Premonte that flows into the lake and where the Villa Rachele which was owned by Cesare Beccaria is located. This villa played host to many famous writers, such as Alessandro Manzoni and Cesare Cantů.
The Comacina Island (Isola Comacina) is reached by boat and contains the fifteenth century church of S. Giovanni and the remains of the church of S. Eufemia (founded in the seventh century and subsequently rebuilt in the eleventh century).
