No. 10 Cable Terrace, Knightstown, Valentia Island is a substantial 2-storey, four bedroom house with exceptional coastal & sea views. It is situated on the sheltered side of the island a few minutes walk from Knightstown village and the fishing/leisure harbour from which a car ferry crosses to Reenard Point on the mainland. The rendered, brick cavity-wall house was built c.1923 by the Western Union Telegraph Company to provide accommodation for the families of engineers and technicians who operated the transatlantic telegraph cable communications system that connected Europe and North America (via Valentia and Newfoundland) and operated from the late 1800's until 1966 from the adjacent Cable Station.

The Cable Terrace houses were designed to a high standard and incorporate many details, fittings and fixtures that were typical of robust, low-maintenance, good quality housing of the period. It is believed that many of the building materials and fixtures, still to be seen in the houses, were transported by sea from Britain, and that local Valentia slate was used for the roof covering, as a superior roofing material.

No.10 is an end-of-terrace house and, as such, is noticeably larger than some other houses on the terrace. On the first floor there are four large bedrooms, each of which will accommodate a double bed (or singles) comfortably; a bathroom with bath/shower and WHB; a separate toilet; and an airing cupboard which houses the hot water cylinder. Each bedroom has an original cast-iron fireplace. The stairs from the ground floor leads to a generous, well-lit hallway connecting the first floor rooms. On the ground floor there is a generous living room and an equally large dining room to the front of the house each on either side of a central entrance/hallway. Both rooms have original cast-iron/tiled fireplaces. To the rear of the house there is a large, recently modernised, well equipped kitchen with an adjacent pantry; a modern, tiled shower room with a quadrant shower cubicle, electric power shower, toilet and WHB; a small storage cupboard; and a utility/boot room.

The house is listed as a protected structure and has been well maintained as a private family's holiday home. All of the windows were replaced approximately six years ago with hardwood sliding sash windows to the original design. There is a small hedged garden to the front and a large garden to the rear. There is an enclosed yard to the rear which gives onto an access lane. Several of the rooms have electric storage heaters.
